4. Scanlon 2002, 140-144, points out that safes is sometimes coupled with
clear sight, that which is visible. Herodotus may be indebted to Xenophanes
as Lloyd 1975 (v. 1), 158-60, claims.

did not hesitate to promote the alliance and was willing to risk
alienation from Sparta (Thuc. 5. 43).
As the issue was debated, some people plausibly brought
forth the accusation that the Argives had medized during the
Persian wars some 60 years earlier. On this issue, Herodotus
does not pass judgment.

For many states that were once great have now become
small; and those that were great in my time were small be-
fore. Knowing therefore that human prosperity never con-
tinues in the same place, I shall mention both alike. (1. 5)

7. It should be noted that Valentinian views on the Hebrew prophets are not
uniform. Certain sources seem to attribute their prophetic utterances entirely
to inspiration by the Demiurge ([Hipp.], Ref. 6.35.1-2; Exc. 50.3, 59.2), whereas
Iren. Haer. 1.7.3 allows for some of the prophecies to derive from Sophia though
mediated by the Demiurge; cf. the reference given in the previous note.

self, which has never been studied from the point of view of the
depiction of physical impairment. These hagiographic narra-
tives, ranging from the fifth-century Passions to the Lives com-
posed in the thirteenth century, describe saints from Sicily and
Southern Italy and were composed either within this geograph-
ical area (known as “indigenous” production) or outside of this
region (known as the literature of the “diaspora”), according to
the recent classification by Stephanos Efthymiadis10.
We will focus on Italo-Greek saints’ Lives, which are nov-
el-like hagiographies and Lives of Italo-Greek monks, as well
as collections of miracles, dating from the eight up to the
twelfth century. These texts offer new and unexplored materi-
al that allows us to examine cultural attitudes towards phys-
ical impairment, legendary or not, from beyond the centre of
the Byzantine Empire. Within the framework of this study,
we will be discussing representations of physical impairment
drawn from nine Italo-Greek hagiographical narratives. The
following texts, illustrative rather than exhaustive, have been
selected as being representative of different tendencies of this
hagiographic tradition and offer fertile ground for further
thought and reflexion.

Dealing with physical impairment in Byzantium
The same goes for Saint Bartholomew of Simeri, who was able
to soothe every suffering, making everybody smile, thanks to
the mildness of his tongue
The literary imitation, the mimesis, of the Gospels is not
limited to a general presentation of impaired people who re-
ceive healing but can also be detected in entire episodes. For
instance, the healing of the bleeding woman26 inspired sever-
al writers of hagiographic literature, such as the author of the
Life of Leo of Catania (“Immediately the source of her deadly
haemorrhage was unexpectedly blocked up, and she received
her cure”27) and Orestes, the patriarch of Jerusalem, in his Life
of Sabas of Collesano, where it is explicitly stated that the
woman suffering from an issue of blood (αἱμορροίας πάθει)
constitutes an imitation of the bleeding woman found in the
In the Life of Elias the Young-
er, the saint gives to a paralysed man his stick and orders him
to walk (ἔγειρε καὶ περιπάτει), following Acts 3.6. The man re-
covers immediately: he gets the saint’s stick, gets up, and walks

τον Eric Hobsbawm.
Βλ. και Horsley - Hanson, ό.π., σελ. 48-49.

Θεω-

a moral test for more valuable things. Given the overall bal-
ance of power between masters and slaves, this understanding
could be particularly valuable for everyday slave survival. And
in specific contexts, like that of the religious conflicts we shall
examine below, it could become a call for very different forms
of slave behaviour.
At the same time, the concept of Christian brotherhood irre-
spective of gender, status and ethnicity could be understood by
slaves in ways that were not welcome by many Christian think-
ers and leaders:

tian morality decried prostitution as an immoral sexual prac-

customers. Nevertheless, prostitution remained legal in late an-

and opposition. What is quite remarkable is a series of late Ro-
man laws that attempt to prohibit the forced prostitution of free
and slave women. A law of Theodosius II from 428 CE is char-
acteristic for the discourse it employs:

ological justification of the ordination of slave priests. Jerome
used the very same figure of Onesimus mentioned above by
the Canons of the Apostles in order to defend the prohibition
of ordaining slave priests without the master’s consent. But Je-
rome uses the figure of Onesimus in precisely the opposite way;
he refers to the extra-biblical tradition about Onesimus, which
posited that he was ultimately consecrated as a bishop122. An-
other interesting case can be reconstructed on the basis of the
letters of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus. Basil
had ordained as priest a slave belonging to a certain Simpli-
cia, and reacted scathingly to her protests against his act123;
after Basil’s death, Simplicia reopened the issue by communi-
cating with Gregory, who defended the act and advised Simpli-
cia that the Christian thing to do would be to accept it124. These
three letters do not give us enough evidence to reconstruct why
these two particulars slaves managed to become ordained by
Jerome and Basil respectively; but there should be no doubt
that without slave agency the problem faced by these Church
fathers would have probably never emerged. Church authori-
ties faced a contradictory situation; on the one hand, respect
for the status quo and property rights could make them to ne-
gate the spiritual wishes of enslaved Christians; on the other

Slaves still under the yoke who take refuge in the com-
munities should be cautioned and restored to their mas-
ters in a better state of mind. In so doing we imitate the
blessed Paul, who, though he had begotten Onesimus131
through the Gospel, nevertheless sent him back to Phi-
lemon, assuring the slave that the yoke of slavery borne
in a manner well pleasing to the Lord would render him
worthy of the Kingdom of heaven. Yet he also exhorted
the master not only to desist from his threat against One-
simus, remembering what his true Lord said: ‘If you for-
give men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also
forgive your trespasses’132, but to adopt kindlier disposi-
tions towards him. Thus he wrote: ‘For perhaps he was
parted from you for a season, that you should have him
back for ever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave,
a beloved brother’133. However, if he is a base type of
master, giving lawless commands and forcing the slave
to transgress the commandment of the true Master, our
Lord Jesus Christ, then it is necessary to put up a fight
that the name of God may not be blasphemed through
that slave’s doing anything displeasing to God. This will
consist in preparing that slave to endure the sufferings
that will be inflicted on him if he is to obey God rather

cal contexts in which these debates took place and which they
in turn influenced.
In this contribution I have tried to explore a paradox. On the
one hand, Christianity took slavery for granted and had no in-
tention of even arguing in favour of its abolition. On the oth-
er hand, Christianity created a form of subjectivity that was
in principle universal, although women and slaves faced se-
vere constraints in exercising this subjectivity. Christian think-
ers and Church authorities most of the time simply ignored the
constraints of enslaved Christian subjectivity; but there were
specific contexts in which the combination of Christian dis-
courses, slave agency and particular conjunctures led to sig-
nificant changes in the historical trajectory of slavery. These
changes were hardly irreversible; we have explored the contin-
uous tug-of-war as a result of the various pressures, interests
and agents involved. None of these changes involved a prin-
cipled opposition to slavery as such or aimed to abolish slav-
ery; but they had substantial effects for millions of slaves, al-
though these effects were not the same for all periods, places
and groups of slaves. I have merely sketched a number of con-
texts and major themes; each of them requires detailed study in
chronological order, rather than the impressionistic selection
of examples I have largely used in this essay.
A final note is in order. The modern discussion of the link
between Christianity and slavery has been based to a very im-
portant extent on continuous discussion and reinterpretation of
a small set of key texts and thinkers (Paul, the Deutero-Pauline
texts, Ignatius, John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nyssa, Augus-
tine). To some extent this is unavoidable, given the influence
of these texts and thinkers; but at the same time, the sizable
volume of early Christian and patristic literature includes a
large number of texts that have never been examined in detail,
or even brought into the discussion. The canonical letter of Pe-
ter of Alexandria, with which this chapter commenced, is a
characteristic example of the numerous sources that have not
been accorded a more important role in modern discussions.
Luckily, over the last twenty years a growing body of scholar-
ship has started to explore this extensive literature with very

of the edition of the Patrologia Graeca (MPG) prepared by the French priest

Chrysostom are contained in volumes 47-64 in MPG, but the first editions of
the texts were prepared by Savile in the 17th century and Montfaucon in the
18th. Migne is considered to simply have copied the work by Montfaucon with
nothing more added than some introductory notes. The edition by Migne and
Montfaucon has been considered the editio princeps.

cial standing and pious acts and prayed thus to God; the
latter was humbled by shame for his sins and only asked
for God’s pardon. Jesus’ parable aimed at castigating the
haughty ones in his society. This form of repentance is
achieved through humility. Since the tax collector is not
really a humble person — rather he is of low morality
and quality — John has to turn to the example of hum-

So, in the end, Chrysostom discusses with his audience
a quotation from 1 Cor 15:9, where Paul humbles him-

mit a sin? Mourn and you absolve the sin. Where is the
difficulty with that? No more do I ask from you, but to
mourn for the sin. I am not asking you to cross seas, nor
to tow boats in the harbour, nor to travel long journeys,
nor to go on an endless road, nor to make a passage by
wild means, but what? Mourn over the sin”).

The same goes for the reference to Paul from the First
Epistle to the Corinthians (1Cor 15:9), to which CPG
4428 has been dedicated.
27. Sermon CPG 4333.2 can also be seen in relation to the liturgical pattern
that it presents: preaching every Sunday on the basis of a selection of read-
ings consisting of a passage from the Old Testament – and in the case of CPG
4333.2 this would have been Kings – a passage from the Gospels – in the case
of CPG 4333.2 this was Luke – an Epistle – in the case of CPG 4333.2 Paul’s
first letter to the Corinthians – and a Psalm – in the case of CPG 4333.2 this
could have been Psalm 50, where the confrontation of David and Nathan oc-
cupies a central place. The reference to Cain and Abel should in this context
be understood simply as a paradigm with no direct liturgical function, or at
least not one clearly discerned yet. I have not been able to define whether this
pattern, which had indeed become the norm by the time John served in Con-
Chrysostome”, In: Kannengiesser, C. (ed.), Jean Chrysostome et Augustin. Act-
Théologie historique 35], pp. 163-4), was only used in the capital, or in other
important centers, like Antioch, or larger parts of the Christian Empire.

good. Apart from the unlikely but still very plausible option that
he wanted posthumously to support the mind behind his ascen-
sion to the patriarchal throne, who was also his main supporter
in stamping out paganism in the regions around the capital43,
there is always the possibility to consider John and Eutropius
as potential allies in an imperial court where no one could trust
the other. John needed perhaps a positive influence at the im-
perial quarters, and Eutropius had no doubt selected John with
the hope that he would act favorably for his causes44. The out-
come disproved them both, but still John could use the example
of the experience of Eutropius’ conflict with Timasius and Pen-
tadia, precisely because it raised him above the condemned and
executed eunuch, who was in any case never mentioned.
Chrysostom created a masterpiece of intertextuality and
weaved the memories of his audience with the thread that was
provided by stories that both he and his congregation knew on-
ly too well. As the preacher, he stood in front of them as the
authority controlling these memories through the narratives he
was commenting, and in which he could choose a role for him-
self — and his office — too.

ing against his legislation, but in the end offering him also asy-
lum – the forgiveness of God that Nathan helped David attain.
If someone could misunderstand David for the ruling king
Arcadius, there is no harm for Chrysostom. In the narrative
from Samuel, he identifies himself with Elijah, who castigates
Ahab for what Jezebel is responsible for. Arcadius should re-
pent, although the strictest punishment is prepared for Eudox-
ia, as he already had shown in his commentary on the Pauline
Epistle to the Romans, where Jezebel who trapped Ahab in sin
is doomed to receive a punishment equal to that of the snake
who trapped Eva in sin.
John presents himself in the court of Constantinople as the
prophet par excellence, in a crucial moment for the state and
ecclesiastical affairs in the city, when his relationship with the
palace was dangerously out of balance for some reasons that
should be rather seen as other than the historicized biblical in-
cident with the widow’s vineyard.
His excellence reached even higher scales in the last sec-
tion of the homily: Luke 18:14 gives a very fitting framework
for judging the misbehavior of the priesthood; we know very
well that John was eager to chastise and cleanse the Church
from all corrupt elements right from the first moment he as-
sumed his position in the Church of Constantinople46. Moreo-
ver, he had good reasons to demand the alliance of some and
the repentance of others during the incidents that were used by
a group of John’s enemies as an opportunity to accuse him of
disrespect and treason. In a counterattack that aimed to intim-
idate the arrogance and lack of penitential morality by some
members of his priesthood, John glorified his favorite Apostle
Paul47, not simply as a preacher and a priest, but as an exam-
ple of humbleness. A very clever rhetoric play by a master of
