Background on Global Logistics

In Summary , the case illustrates the complicated and fragmented nature of the maritime

transport ecosystem, where vital information about cargo shipments, ship routes, and

operational specifics is frequently trapped in siloed systems and not easily accessible to all

stakeholders. Murray Johnson's proposed solution for establishing a centralized information-

sharing service has the potential to reshape the industry by enabling real-time data access,

improving coordination, and reducing delays. The success of this endeavor, however, will be

dependent on overcoming significant challenges, such as establishing data sharing protocols,

gaining industry-wide adoption, and addressing the diverse regulatory and operational

practices across different regions and ports. Murray's vision is a promising step toward

modernizing and streamlining the maritime transportation sector, but it will take the

combined efforts of all stakeholders to make it a reality.

3
Key Terms In Scenario

 Automated Identification System- An Automated Identification System (AIS) is a

technology used on ships to transmit vital information such as the ship's unique

identification number, destination, and expected time of arrival to other vessels.

 Global Logistics- (GL) is a global shipping and distribution company in charge of

managing and optimizing various companies' supply chain logistics. It handles

international transportation and delivery of goods ranging from small items to large

and heavy machinery.

 Cargo Tracking - Cargo tracking is the process of tracking and tracing the movement

of goods or cargo from point of origin to point of destination. It entails gathering and

updating information about the cargo's location and status.

 Maritime Transport- The transportation of goods, passengers, or cargo by sea or

waterways using various types of vessels such as ships, container ships and cargo

vessels. It is an essential component of international trade and commerce, allowing

goods to move between countries and continents.

4
Global Logistics Main Stakeholders
As an important player in the logistics and maritime transport industries, GL works with a

variety of stakeholders to efficiently move goods across international borders. These include:

 Carlos Fernandez (COO of GL)

Carlos Fernanadez main responsibility is to improve GL's ability to track overseas

cargo shipments for their customers, and to provide real-time tracking services.

 Murray Johnson (Informatics-

His responsibility is to address the challenges of tracking overseas cargo

shipments by finding innovative solutions.

 Reggie Finch (Shipping Agent)-

Reggie Finch's main responsibility is to share his expertise and insights regarding

maritime transport and data flow, enabling a better understanding of the challenges

and opportunities within the industry

 Captain Anders Haraldson-

His main duty as the ship's captain, holds a pivotal role where the utmost priority is

the safety and effective functioning of the vessel.

 Port Authorities –
Port authorities are essential because they manage port operations, including docking
and cargo handling,

5
Challenges Of Global Logistics

The case shows that sharing and coordinating crucial information is extremely difficult for

the maritime sector. The main problem is the absence of standardized procedures and systems

for data sharing, which makes it challenging for everyone to work together effectively. As a

result, information is disseminated in a number of ways, leading to confusion and decreasing

the effectiveness of operations. The widespread lack of standardization, a major obstacle to

the industry's development, is at the root of these difficulties.

The heavy reliance on manual data exchange processes, as shown by Captain

Haraldson's daily reports to ship owners and Reggie's manual delivery of documents to

multiple authorities involved in cargo shipping, exacerbates the problem. These manual

workflows not only waste valuable time but also introduce the possibility of errors, and, more

importantly, they impede real-time information sharing, perpetuating silos and information

gaps. The industry's reliance on inefficient communication methods such as email, paper

documents, and phone calls, which are prominently featured in the scenario, contributes to

the situation. These traditional modes of interaction are inefficient and lack the real-time

capabilities required by modern logistics.

6
Business Opportunity for Global Logistics

Murray sees a significant business opportunity in creating a data-sharing service that can

access and provide real-time information from various sources within the maritime transport

ecosystem. This service would bridge the information gaps and connect the different sets of

data involved in shipping, making it accessible in the format needed when requested by

authorized users.

The business opportunity Murray envisions has the potential to create a win-win- situation for

businesses, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders in the maritime transport ecosystem.

It would enhance efficiency, safety, and coordination while opening possibilities for

innovation and improved data-driven decision-making.

7
Key Components of Opportunity

(Business Stakeholders)

The key components of this opportunity are:

1. Data Integration and Sharing Service: Murray envisions creating a platform or

service that can aggregate data from various stakeholders in maritime transport, including

ship data (from AIS and other sources), cargo data, route data, and other relevant

information. This platform would act as a central hub for data exchange, providing real-

time access to authorized users. It would facilitate the sharing of information among

different entities involved in the process.

2. Real-time Information Access: The service would provide real-time access to critical

data, enabling stakeholders like ship captains, freight forwarders, port services, agents, and

others to make informed decisions promptly. For example, captains could track the

progress of their voyages, freight forwarders could optimize cargo management, and port

services could improve traffic flow and services planning.

3. Standardized Data Protocols: To make this data-sharing ecosystem work,

standardized data sharing and access protocols would be necessary. This ensures that data

can be shared seamlessly

8
among different entities while maintaining security and privacy. It would involve

establishing common standards for data formats and access permissions.

4. Efficiency and Coordination: Murray’s idea aims to improve the efficiency and

coordination of maritime transport operations. This would result in cost savings, reduced

delays, and improved overall performance for businesses involved in shipping and port

operations.

9
Key Components of Opportunity

(Non -Business Stakeholders)

For non-business stakeholders (such as port authorities, regulatory agencies, and maritime

safety organizations), there are several potential opportunities and benefits:

1. Enhanced Safety: Access to real-time ship data and route information would enhance

safety measures. Regulatory agencies could monitor vessel movements more effectively,

reducing the risk of accidents, collisions, and groundings.

2. Environmental Impact: Better data access would allow environmental agencies to

monitor and enforce environmental regulations more effectively, reducing pollution and

ensuring compliance with international standards.

3. Traffic Management: Port authorities and vessel traffic services (VTS) could use real-

time data to manage traffic flow more efficiently, reducing congestion in ports and

waterways.

4. Security: Improved data sharing could enhance security measures in ports and coastal

areas, helping authorities identify and respond to security threats promptly.

10
5. Customs and Regulatory Compliance: Customs agencies could streamline cargo

inspection and clearance processes by having access to accurate cargo data in real-time,

improving overall trade efficiency.

6. Economic Impact: Improved coordination and efficiency in maritime transport could

have positive economic impacts on regions dependent on shipping and trade, potentially

leading to increased economic development and job opportunities.

11
Potential Solution to the
Problems in Global Logistics

Individuals at Global Logistics encountered international shipping challenges, whether the

shipments originated in China or were destined for Europe or North America. Furthermore,

customer complaints about late or undelivered packages highlighted the difficulty in

obtaining accurate order information. To address these concerns, the proposed solution

entails the creation of a tracking system capable of pinpointing package locations and

tracking their progress. This system would allow shipment dates, times, and expected arrivals

to be tracked. To add, establishing a collaborative network with port authorities could

improve the efficiency with which shipments are received and dispatched. Additionally,

forming alliances with international courier services has the potential for long-term

relationships that ensure timely package delivery.

We also want detailed information about the cargo, such as the selected land transportation

providers and the delivery company that will handle outsourcing, as well as the best port and

terminal for our operations. The system under consideration aims to precisely identify the

cargo's exact location, the expected delivery time, and even provide an estimate of the

personnel required for package handling.

This ambitious plan will require an estimated initial investment of one billion units. This

funding will allow the system's potential to be developed and fully realized. Global Logistics

(GL) will be critical in ensuring that this plan is carried out smoothly.
