God is seeking for true worshippers

John 4:19-24
19
The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20
Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men
ought to worship.
21
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this
mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit
and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Introduction

An article was published years ago, it describes a dog as a worshipper. Some people agreed and
some didn’t. The dog was described as a worshipper because whenever he sees his owner, he
would go to greet him, bowing down to them, laying on the ground, licking their feet or hands
sometimes even their faces. This type of attitude reflects the attitude of a true worshipper of
God.

The statement that Jesus made in St John 4, changed the way how we view worship and it
points the way how we ought to worship.
The woman at the well, saw worship as an act at a particular place and time. Jesus informed her
that the time has come where worship will not be subjected to a particular time or place. The
time has come where true worship takes precedence over ritualistic worship. Neither the Jews
nor the Samaritans were indulged in true worship. Indeed, Jerusalem was the place to offer
worship, however, they were using the house of the Lord to trade money.

What is Worship? To make obeisance (to bow), do reverence to or towards. To kiss. To

prostrate oneself in homage. Worship is an acknowledgement of who God is. Satan Said to
Jesus in Matthew 4:9, All these will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Worship
involves bowing down ourselves low before God not only physically, but in our hearts. True
worship comes from a place of acknowledgement, in who God is.
Matthew 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth
thou art the Son of God.
Matthew 28:17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
What are acts of worship? When we acknowledge who God is we worship him with by the
fruits of our lips, whether its words (talking about God) or by singing, by giving (tithes and
offering)
Essentially to worship God means to do what he says.
The most essential thing about praising and worshipping God is doing it in truth. John 4:23
What is true worship? It is a candor of mind which is free from;
1. Affection (not in the mood or feeling the vibes)
2. Pretense (putting on a show)
3. Imitation falsehood or deceit.
For years we have ascribed worship to only singing songs but worship is a lifestyle. True
worship comes from our spirits unto God. Worship is an inward outward expression not an
outward inward expression. We not only worship God in songs but we are to worship him with
our lives.

Who is to be worshipped? God, Jesus and the holy spirit. Acts 10:25-26 Cornelius bow down
and worshipped Peter but Peter took him and told him that he is just a man as himself. As
believers we must be careful not to give worship to our human leaders.
Warning:
We must be careful of idolatry. Giving over the worship of God to other things and even
people.
1. When we gather for worship, other things are being praised instead of God
2. We hold people and things in higher regard than God. (leaders, the church building, etc)
