Live Sound Design Project

Part 1: Context/Description of Goals

My ensemble will be the Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony. This ensemble

currently consists of 41 performers, with 35 winds, 5 percussionists, and 1 keyboardist. The

ensemble’s sound should be captured in a way that maintains the integrity of the group, while

also ensuring the group sounds balanced in the performance space.

The Wind Symphony will be performing a live concert in the Majestic Theater. The

theater is the ensemble’s main performance venue and seats 1,200 people. There is seating along

the entire floor of the theater, as well as a balcony area all along the back wall. My biggest goal

with this venue is to ensure that anyone sitting directly below the balcony will have sound

quality just as great as those sitting closer to the stage or in the balcony.

Part 6: Conclusion

Two power outlets, one in each stage wing, should be available for use. The shell should be in
place surrounding the ensemble.

One main speaker should be downstage stage right and the other main speaker should be
downstage stage left. Both should be facing towards the center of the audience. The dynamic
microphone (Mic 3) should be downstage stage left, placed approximately between the second
and third rows of the ensemble. The condenser microphones (Mic 1 & 2) should be on the floor
in front of the stage at centerstage and raised to ensemble level. They should pointed towards
either side of the ensemble. The condenser microphones require phantom power to be turned on.
The mixer should be placed in the stage right wing and plugged into the power outlet there with
the 5’ AC power cable. The keyboard amp will also be plugged into the stage right power outlet
with a 15’ AC power cable. Both speakers should be plugged into the closest backstage power
outlets with 10’ AC power cables. Both speakers should be placed on the inner side of the pillars
so they are not obstructed by them.

All microphones will be plugged into the mixer in their respective channels (listed in input list)
with XLR cables. Mic 3 will get the 35’ and Mics 1 and 2 will each get 20’ cables. The 6’ XLR
cable will go from the mixer to Speaker 1 and the 50’ XLR cable will go from the mixer to
Speaker 2. The keyboard will be plugged into the keyboard amp using the 6’ ¼” TRS cable and
does NOT need to be plugged into the mixer.
