Aaron’s Blog
Hi everyone! Today, I want to tell you all about my volunteering experience at Stonehenge
here in the UK. I volunteered there for six weeks during the summer and it’s one of the
best things I’ve ever done!
Stonehenge is a well-known British prehistoric monument that dates back around 5000
years. The Stonehenge site is an ancient archaeological site in Wiltshire, England in the
UK and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Stonehenge monument is a stone circle
with huge stones that weigh around 25 tonnes each. Over the years some of the stones
have broken or have disappeared completely so it’s very important that we do whatever we
can to care for this valuable site.
As a volunteer at Stonehenge, I did lots of different jobs. In my first couple of weeks, I
helped maintain the gardens and helped welcome visitors to the site and told them about it.
But after that, I attended some training workshops for volunteers and experts taught us
how to make ropes and how to do ‘daubing’ – a special technique people used to build
Neolithic houses. Then I got to use my new skills to help restore the Neolithic houses at
the Stonehenge site with lots of other friendly volunteers.
This volunteer experience wasn’t easy, but it was amazing because I met some fantastic
people. Although, the most rewarding thing of all was that I got to lend a hand and make
sure this incredible British site continues to stand for many more years to come. Have you
done any of this type of volunteering? Let me know in the comments.
37. Aaron felt the most important thing about his time at Stonehenge was ______.
A. learning all about the UK’s heritage
B. raising awareness about volunteering
C. meeting people with similar interests
D. making sure the heritage site survives
40. Which word/phrase is closest in meaning to 'lend a hand' in the last paragraph?
A. participate
B. give help
C. learn skills
D. experience
C. Read the following passage. For each of the questions from 41-45, write T if the
statement is TRUE and F if the statement is FALSE.
Ironbridge Gorge
Ironbridge is a village in Shropshire in the UK. It’s next to the River Severn and it’s also
home to a UNESCO World Heritage site - Ironbridge Gorge. Although it isn’t the most
famous British World Heritage site, it still attracts around 600,000 visitors each year.
The Ironbridge Gorge site is an area of 5.5 km² and has a population of around 4,000. The
site has various features including old houses and equipment from the period. However,
the main feature of the site is the huge iron bridge which gave the village its name and
crosses the river. The bridge was the world’s first cast iron bridge. Cast iron is a type of
iron that is easy to shape, making it perfect for creating large monuments like this.
Workers first built the bridge in 1779. It took around 378 tons of iroU+006e to build the
bridge and it officially opened in 1781. Both people and vehicles used the bridge for over
150 years and had to pay to use it, but in 1934 the government took the decision to close
the bridge to vehicles. At the same time, they also decided to make it free for anyone to
use on foot.
From 2017 to 2018, a year-long project took place at the site. Its aim was to make the
bridge look as good as new. They replaced some of the pieces of cast iron and they also
protected the iron by painting it to make it look how it did in the past. To paint the bridge
required six painters and 2400 litres of paint. In fact, the whole project cost £3.6 million,
but a lot of people agree that it’s worth it because it means that people can continue
visiting the bridge for many more years to come.
41. There are local people who live in the heritage site. ________
42. The site got its name from the village of Ironbridge. ________
43. They had not used cast iron for bridges before Ironbridge. ________
