Essay Style Guidelines

 Length: 3.500-5.000 words (excluding the Bibliography)

 Font: 12pt Times New Roman.
 Spacing: 1.5 line spacing throughout.
 Page numbers to be size 12 and placed on the bottom right-hand corner.
 Do not make a title page for your paper. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page,
list your name, student number, your instructor's name, the course, and the date.
Again, be sure to use double-spaced text. Double space again and center the title in
bold. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks. Write the title
in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters.
 The introduction of your essay serves two important purposes. First, it sets the aim
of the paper. Second, it gives your reader a roadmap of what you're going to say and
the overarching point you're going to make – your thesis statement.
 The middle part of the essay must fulfil the promises made in your introduction,
and must support your final conclusions. Failure to meet either or both of these
requirements will irritate your reader, and will demonstrate a lack of self-critique and
of editing. The central part of your essay also needs some form of structure
(chronological, thematic. comparative or by context) The structure you choose needs
to be one that will be most helpful to you in addressing the essay title. The content of
this central part will contain a conceptual dıscussion; ampirical evidence with relevant
referencing; and discussion with relevant examples.
 Conclusion: A powerful conclusion is a valuable tool. The aim is to leave your reader
feeling that you have done a good job. A generic structure that you may find useful is:
i) a brief recap of what you have covered in relation to the essay title ii) reference to
the larger issue iii) evaluation of the main arguments; iv) highlighting the most
important aspects.
 Referencing: All references should be given in parentheses, not in footnotes (unless
there’s an exceptional reason why a footnote is needed, e.g. a long list of references
that would break into the text too much). They should consist of just the author’s
name, date of publication and the page number(s). Reference can also be made by
mentioning the author’s name in the text, in which case it shouldn’t be given again in
the parenthesis: Tannen has argued this point (2010: 178).
 Bibliography/List of Works Cited: This list should appear at the end of your essay and
should include all works referred to in the essay, listed in alphabetical order by
author’s surname.
