Teachings of Buddha

Early life

• Gautam Buddha was born in a gana known as the Sakya gana.


• He left his home in search of truth and wandered in the forest for several years.
• After meditating for days, he finally got enlightenment under a Peepal tree in
Bodhgaya, Bihar.
• He gave his first sermon in Sarnath, Varanasi and spent the rest of his life
teaching people.

• The essence of the teachings of Buddha lies in the Four Noble Truths, where he
explains the reasons for the suffering in the world.
• Sometimes, even after getting what one desires , there may be the desire to want
more or something else. This is described by Buddha as ‘tanha’ or ‘thirst’.
Middle path

• Buddha suggests that to overcome one’s desires, one should follow moderation in
every thing.
Teachings of Buddha

• He preached non-violence towards all living things including animals. He taught


that people should be kind to one another and respect the lives of others.
Teachings of Buddha

• Buddha believed in the concept of Karma or the actions of human beings.


According to the philosophy of Buddhism, good and bad karma affects us both in
this life and in the next.
Sermons of Buddha

• The teachings of Buddha were simple. He gave his sermon in the language of
ordinary people, Prakrit, which made it possible for the ordinary people to
understand his message.
