Summary of the story entitled “The Cask of Amontillado”

The story of ''The Cask of Amontillado'' starts with the narrator Montresor explaining that
a man named Fortunato in the first place has wronged him a thousand times over. He continues
to assure us that he has given Fortunato no insight to the fact that he is plotting to kill him, and
he plans to use Fortunato's knowledge of wine to lure him to his death. Very quickly, Montresor
entices Fortunato to come to his home to see the pipe of Amontillado that he has acquired. Then,
when they arrive, they go into the catacombs via a winding staircase. Remember, Fortunato is
very drunk, and when they are in way in there, Fortunato begins coughing. After that when they
reach the bottom area of the catacombs, they find a smaller crypt that is in-lined with human
bones. Fortunato is so drunk that he is confused as Montresor chains him to the area.
However, once Montresor starts building a wall, Fortunato sobers up quickly and
Montresor describe the sounds he hears. Once the wall is about halfway up, Fortunato begins
screaming, and Montresor mocks him. Fortunato calms, and says, 'A very good joke indeed,'
Montresor humors him for a moment, but soon Fortunato realizes it's not a game and after that he
screams, 'For the love of God, Montresor,' and Montresor repeats his words. Montresor, who
wants Fortunato to continue to beg, becomes impatient and calls out to Fortunato. In hopes of
getting Fortunato to respond in some way, Montresor throws a torch into the only open area left.
He hears the tinkling of bells and says his 'heart grew sick' but only on the 'account of the
dampness of the catacombs,' and he finishes building the wall. And finally, he says the events
happened fifty years prior and he concludes his reminiscence with 'rest in peace.'
I used the First, Then, and Finally in writing this summary. In this technique, there are
three (3) words represent the beginning, main action, and conclusion of a story, respectively:
First: What happened first? Include the main character and main event/action; Then: What key
details took place during the event/action? and finally: What were the results of the event/action?
Writing a summary using this technique is quite simple since you are just going to write what
happened first, and then what happened next until you reached the end of the story.
The story, if you are going to evaluate it, it is something like horror and the writer
somehow have a same situation like that. That the writer uses other names and people to portray
the role that the writer experienced. Or maybe it is not, since Edgar Allan Poe likes to write a
horror story and almost all of his story is about crime, horror and wickedness.
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, author, editor, and literary critic who is
best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He
is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States,
and of American literature. Edgar Allan Poe's best-known works include the poems “To Helen”
(1831), “The Raven” (1845), and “Annabel Lee” (1849); the short stories of wickedness and
crime “The Tell-Tale Heart” (1843) and “The Cask of Amontillado” (1846); and the supernatural
horror story “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1839).
