APC Training Exercise for Wiring Closets

Level 1
New Hire and Silver Certified Training
For use world-wide

Purpose
This training exercise provides practice in using the APC Design Portal and the Configurator for Wiring Closets. It should be
used for practice purposes only either during an APC-sponsored training course or during a partner self-initiated practice
session. Used as a training activity, the APC instructor will provide feedback in class on the solution generated by the
configuration tools. Used as a partner self-initiated practice session, APC does not provide any feedback concerning the
correctness or completeness of the solution generated by the configuration tool. It is possible that there will be more than one
potential “solution” based on the values used in the configuration tool.

Materials Needed
• Password and Username for the APC Design Portal and access to the Configurator for Wiring Closets.

Time Allowance
Suggested time to complete training exercise: 30 minutes

Customer Profile
• The customer is a division of a large independent wireless communication provider. Their role is to train customer-
facing employees quickly and efficiently. Currently most training is conducted face to face in a classroom setting.

• The business office currently has no backup power solution and is based in an area often exposed to lightening. Most
of the equipment is plugged straight into the wall with no protection against outages, brownouts or spikes due to
lightning hits. Any power outage will interrupt the broadcast training, which will result in fewer sales. In a typical power
failure, it takes nine minutes to restore the broadcast system and get back on the air. The classes take approximately
one hour, and the salespeople must meet a quota each month. Losing nine minutes to a power failure means a loss
of audience and potential sales.

Business Challenges and Issues Driving Need for Solution

• Future plans are to broadcast training classes via satellite directly to each retail store, using state-of-the-art
technology; reducing travel expenses and time away from the sales floor, a significant savings for the company.
• There is a need for a very small physical footprint due to limited space, and to save the cost of creating a raised floor.
• The customer needs a solution that will allow for future growth (10%) without incurring significant up front costs.
Waiting for planned facility expansion in two years is not an option; the customer needs a two-rack solution with an
average of 2500 Watts of power per rack that can be implemented quickly.
• The customer wants to be able to monitor the temperature and the humidity, receive alerts in case of a problem with
the power and manage all equipment from a single console.
