Introduction
• Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a text-based chat system for instant messaging. IRC is designed for group
communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private
messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing.
• IRC was invented by Jarkko Oikarinen for use on the Internet in 1988
• IRC is an open protocol that uses TCP and, optionally, TLS. An IRC server can connect to other IRC servers to
expand the IRC network.
• Users access IRC networks by connecting a client to a server. Many client implementations, such as mIRC,
HexChat and irssi, and server implementations
Some of the main points about IRC:
• IRC is a text-based chat system.

Types of IRC Crimes

There are many different types of crimes that can be committed on IRC,
including:

• Child Sexual Abuse material (CSAM)
• Harassment

Harassment

• Harassment is defined as any unwanted


or threatening behavior that makes
someone feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
• Harassment can take many forms,
including verbal abuse, threats,
stalking, and physical violence.
• If you are being harassed on IRC, report
it to the authorities and the IRC
network.
Fraud

• Fraud is any deception that is used to gain


something from someone else, such as money
or personal information.
• Fraud can take many forms, including phishing,
identity theft, and credit card fraud.
• If you think you have been the victim of fraud
on IRC, report it to the authorities and your
bank
Spamming

• Spamming is the sending of


unsolicited bulk messages,
typically advertising products
or services.
• Spamming can be annoying and
can also be a form of fraud.
• If you receive spam on IRC,
report it and block the user.
DoS Attacks

• A denial-of-service (DoS) attack is an
attempt to make a website or service
unavailable to its users.
• DoS attacks can be carried out by flooding a
website or service with so much traffic that
it becomes overloaded and crashes.
• DoS attacks can also be used to disrupt IRC
networks.
Hacking

• Hacking is the unauthorized access to a


computer system or network.
• Hackers can use their access to steal data,
install malware, or disrupt operations.
• IRC networks are a popular target for hackers.
Carding

• Carding is a form of credit card fraud in which a stolen credit card is used
to charge prepaid cards or purchase gift cards.
• Credit card thieves who are involved in this type of fraud are called
“carders.”
• Card forums are online shopping venues for stolen credit and debit card
information and criminal techniques.
• Carding is a third-party attack on an individual's financial information.
• Newer technologies like CVVs, CAPTCHA, and multifactor
authentication have been effective against carders.

Warez Distribution

• Warez refers to illegally distributed copyrighted software that has


been cracked or stripped of its copy protection and made freely
available for download
• It is usually an unauthorized software release by organized groups and
often disables any protection, such as CD key or online registration.
• The most common downloads at warez sites include software or
applications from well known manufacturers like Symantec,
Microsoft and Adobe.
• It also includes leaking unreleased Songs,Movies etc.
Sale of Illegal Articles

• This would include trade of narcotics, weapons and wild-life etc., by posting
information on websites, auction channels, or simply by using email
communication.
• Research shows that number of people employed in this criminal area.
• Daily peoples receiving so many emails and texts on channels with offer of
banned or illegal products for sale.
The Signs of an IRC
Crime
• You are being asked to provide personal information,
such as your address or phone number
• You are being threatened or harassed
• You are being sent unsolicited messages, such as spam or
phishing emails
• You are being asked to download files or click on links
that you are not sure about.
• Report the crime to the authorities.
• Be careful about what information you share online

The Laws Against IRC Crimes?

• The laws against IRC crimes vary from country to country.

authorized access.
• The CAN-SPAM Act makes it a crime to send unsolicited commercial email.
And, the PATRIOT Act gives the government broad powers to investigate and
prosecute cybercrime.
