LI: To use a range of ‘ed’ openers.

Activity 1:

Using the word bank to help, choose 1 ED word to open the following
sentences.

-Read the sentence first, before you decide which ED word to use.

-Remember to think carefully about what each ED word means! Choose


carefully from the attached word mat.

-Write each sentence out fully.

E.g. Julius scrambled his way up the dark side of the mountain. = Exhausted,
Julius scrambled his way up the dark side of the mountain.

he wondered what dangers lay ahead.

he grabbed his trusty blade as the menacing beast pounced towards


him.

he roamed the cold, damp cave in search of his lost love.

her eyes lit up as she called out his name from behind a large
boulder.

they grabbed each other in their arms and swore to never let go
again.
Activity 2 –

Read the poem, ‘Before she was Harriet.’ Create your own sentences
beginning with ‘ed’ openers to depict Harriet’s actions and emotions in the
following roles:

Suffragist, General, Spy, Nurse, Aunt Harriet, Moses and Conductor.

For example: Conductor

‘Exhausted by the tiresome trek through silky swamps Harriet, the


conductor, persevered on the railroad to freedom.’

‘Determined to reach a destiny of freedom, the conductor led her


passengers on.’

Challenge:

Use parenthesis to insert ‘ed’ clauses.

E.g. Poor Harriet, pressured by the unforeseen circumstances that unfolded


before her, continued working day at night to relieve her disenchanted
patients.
