Abstract
The Development of Underground Railways are the urgent need of Rapid Transit System in this
Haphazard and unplanned urbanization of Kathmandu Valley, being the capital hub of all
education, political, health and economical domains. The state of public transportation services
in Kathmandu Valley is barely coping with demand. Nowadays, during peak hours the average
speed of vehicles can be as low as 7 kmph. Although metropolitan authority has addressed the
immediate solution to the problem by addition of Sajha Yatayat and improving bus rapid transit
system on Ring road but it can only offer a midterm solution in next few years. Given poor
condition of public transportation the gradient of private vehicles are rising adding to the traffic
increasing traffic gradient.
Realizing this heavy traffic congestion the authorities have been actively carried out and are
getting involved in road widening campaign which is being a threat to local residents causing
protests. Also given the city grain of Kathmandu Valley which had multiple cultural heritage
sites the road widening schemes are becoming a threat to national heritages.
These solution, however, aren’t sustainable and city is in desperate need of a mass rapid transit
system, that is metro rail system that can carry (25000 to 60000) passengers in each direction
without interaction with other vehicle.
Mobility network would need to be planned over long periods, stretching forward beyond the
next five to ten years. In this regard the planning of early planning of metro rail in the valley
would be timely and essential.(Dr. B.L. Amatya)
Background
KATHMANDU METRO AND METRO VISION
Looking at the trends of city grain where roads are very narrow and embedded with national
heritages so there are barely space for building Sky-trains. So to keep the city moving we
need underground metro system. Railway connectivity is considered as the most economic
and fastest means of transportation for the movement of freight and passenger traffic. The
development of railway line in Nepal is still at a nascent stage. But, to address the sluggish
economic growth of the country, one high priority area of Nepal’s infrastructure focus should
be implementation of internal and cross-border railways connectivity plans and policies (KC,
2017). It will promote trade, tourism, investment, mitigates unemployment and poverty and
contributes to the overall economic development of the country.

Objective
The goal of this model is to portray how underground railway system will distribute over the
Kathmandu valley. The main objectives of this project will be:

1. To fulfill the traffic demand of Kathmandu Valley population in best way.

2. To provide best alternative to for traffic congestion free public transportation.
3. To encourage people to use public transportation thereby reducing the number of
personalized vehicles mainly cars and two-wheelers.
4. To reduce air pollution as it being electrified railway line which will also reduce import
of fuel to some extent.
5. To provide safe, reliable, economic and environmental friendly mode of mass
transportation.
6. To save travel time which can be utilized in other economic activities.
7. To improve quality of life in capital city enhancing pride of country and better image of
the country for the tourists.
Applications
As proposed per the Metro route map for Kathmandu core area by Dr. B.L. Amtya in his
presentation:

It basically consists of four lines where blue and green lines represent the cross rail of
Kathmandu which is to be prioritized. During the construction of underground metro system is
the most expensive and complex part to build so optimize the number of these station is best way
to economize the system, the black circle represent the optimum 9 major underground stations.

We need to have 20 years

Rail vision to build metro
system in Kathmandu
Methodology
The metro development in Kathmandu Valley can be done in three ways by:
1. Tracks on land (AT-grade)
2. Underground bore tunnels
3. Elevated tracks

The orange part highlights area

that require underground
development consisting major
parts of Kathmandu Valley and
some parts of the Bhaktapur area.
The picture below represents blue
dotted lines that are outer or the
radial part outside the core part
can be elevated or on the surface
but the inner part shown in the
solid lines will be in tunnels.
Statement of problem

Given the soil condition of Kathmandu Valley that is majorly Silty clay type and according to
Peak Ground Acceleration with 10% Probability of Exceedance in 50 years Kathmandu lies in
Seismic zone tunneling can be challenging. After the geological and geographical feasibility
study of tunneling. In the profile and plan of the Tunnel extent of Kathmandu line. We could see
that:

The tunnel is below 25m to 80m from the surface and passes from Tankeshwor to New road with
pinch point at Bishnumati river. This shows tunnels are buildable in Nepal at the depth of 18m to
35m and diameter of 5.4m to 5.8m. The tunnels can be build using standard concrete linings
which are about 300mm thick concrete slabs with 5-7slabs in a segment. The TBM(Tunnel
Boring Machine) of 6.3-6.7m diameter can be bought for boring tunnel.
These 9 major underground
station proposed in
Kathmandu will be multistory
basement structure and act as a
junction.
Materials Required for our model

1. Thermocol
2. Plyboard
3. Scissors
4. Glue stick
5. Glue gun sticks
6. Super glue
7. Painting brush of different size
8. Painting color
9. Steel scales
10. Paper cutter
11. Toothpick
12. Icecream stick
13. LED lights
14. Two sets of AA battery
15. A1,A2,A3 paper

Besides this we may need more material to construction of our model.

Conclusion
The effective addition of railway lines in the Kathmandu Valley could greatly relief the traffic
load acting as a quality public transportation medium with high mass rapid transit system
capacity which will drastically improve the traffic congestion, use of fuel, decrease the private
vehicle use, improve environment and improve the quality of life of inhibants of Kathmandu
Valley. Instead of threatening solutions like road extension this is less harmful to local =s and
also national heritages that cannot be misplaced. This is indeed an expensive projects requiring
long Base period but it is also a self-reliant and beneficial project that is a necessity given the
rapid encroachment in Kathmandu Valley. This Metro Rail Development must be done in
cooperation between urban regeneration, housing, heritage preservation. and also integrate with
other forms of transportation.
