A review of GOTHIC SHORT STORIES.

This book has four short stories of famous 19th century writers such as Allan Poe, Bram
Stoker, WW Jacobs and Amelia Edwards. The tales are also known as Gothic classic
genre with ghosts and horror-stories. They have in common the atmosphere, the
mystery, the horror…
In the first story The Monkey’s paw, the White family lives on an isolated house in the
north of England. The Sergeant Major Morris a family friend has a talisman. It’s a
monkey’s paw and it has three wishes for its own. He doesn’t want to talk about his
wishes and he’s very angry and scared. You must to have very careful with that you
want…
In the second, The Phantom coach, a young man is lost at night in a terrible snowstorm.
He finds a man in the dark and takes him to your house. The Master, the owner of the
house told him a story about an old mail coach accident. The young man went to take
the carriage and …
In the third The Fall of the House of Usher. A gentleman arrives at the Usher’s house
where Roderick and his sister Madeline live. He’s a Roderick’s friend since they were
children. They look sick and the atmosphere is terrible, the death is near, you can fell it.
The last history was written by Bram Stoker, you know him. He wrote Dracula. Here,
he tell us the story of Malcolm Malcolmson, a math student. Malcolm looked for a
isolated and quiet house to study and found mystery, horror, rats and a rope.
My favorite story is the third because I discovered Allan Poe when I was sixteen and he
was the star of my library. I read everything I could about him and also The Fall of the
House of Usher. You can feel the fear, the horror, the death, in every page, in every line.
19th century writers are baroques, they describe the ambient very well, they are in no
hurry. The story may be a bit autobiographical, just a little.
The book for B1 English students is difficult but interesting in their abstracts. I’ve
enjoyed the stories, fear and ghosts. I don’t know why but I’ve written more of my book
in the first story, maybe it was the hardest for me.
