Hi, I’m Giorgio Salvatore. I’m twenty-six years old and I’m from Calabria in the

Hi Carmen,
I’m Sue Manners, I’m twenty-six years old, and I’m from Maine. I live in a small house
in Portland with my best friend, Ann, and I’m a receptionist. I work in a big hotel in
downtown Portland and I wear a blue and white uniform. I have a car and I drive to the
hotel every morning. I drink a lot of coffee because I work long hours, but I like my job
because I meet people from different parts of the world.
What else do you want to know about me? Well, my parents have a house in Bangor,
northeast of here. I have two sisters – their names are Jane and Wendy. Jane is a student
in New York and Wendy is a chef in an Italian restaurant in Bangor. My parents are
retired now.
What do I do in my free time? Well, I don’t do a lot of sports, but I sometimes play
tennis with Ann. I love music – my favorite kind of music is Italian opera and I listen to
it in my car and on my iPod. I also play the guitar and the piano. On Thursdays I study
Spanish at a language school because I want to work in Spain. On the weekends, I visit
my family or I stay in Portland and go to the movies with my friends.
Write and tell me about yourself.

Living in New York City

Read about three young people who are living in New York City.
Kathy O’Brien is 26 years old, and she’s from Ireland. Right now, she’s living in an
apartment in Brooklyn, and she has a job in a store. She doesn’t like her job, but she
needs the money. When the weather is good, Kathy sings and plays her guitar in
Central Park. She is very good, and lots of people stop and listen to her. Kathy goes to a
lot of auditions because she wants to be a professional singer one day. She’s also using
her laptop to make a CD of her songs to send to all the music companies in New York.
Marc Dubois is from Switzerland. He’s 19 and he’s studying computing at New York
University. He has classes during the week, and he works in an Italian restaurant on the
weekend. At the moment Marc’s living in an apartment near the university, but he’s
looking for another place to live. His apartment is nice, and from his room he can see
the Hudson River. However, it’s expensive. Marc thinks New York is a great place, but
he doesn’t like the cold winter days. Luckily, there are lots of things that people can do
here when it’s cold! Jamie Chandler is 27, and he’s from Australia. He’s traveling
around the world, but now he’s in New York. He’s working as a New York guide.
Jamie’s mom is Japanese, so he speaks Japanese well. When he’s working, Jamie takes
groups of Japanese visitors around New York to see the famous sights. They always
take lots of photos! Jamie also works as a cook in a restaurant in the evening – it’s in
Manhattan, and musicians also play there every night.

GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury is a pretty town in the southwest of England. You can see tourists
downtown at any time of the year because it has some famous monuments, such as
Glastonbury Abbey and St. John’s Church. It is a small, quiet town, and it doesn’t have
a movie theater, a theater, or a nightclub.
However, every year in June, around 150,000 music fans arrive for “Glasto,” the
world famous Glastonbury Festival. The festival started in 1970 and takes place at
Worthy Farm, around 10 miles from the town of Glastonbury. It’s four days of music
from some of the world’s top performers: singers like Beyoncé, and bands like U2 and
Coldplay.
Glastonbury isn’t very big, and you can walk around and hear different music in
different places. Over 300 singers and bands come to play their music here, so it has
nearly everything. Rock, reggae, and rap are some of the things you can hear, but there
isn’t any classical music. The Glastonbury Arts Festival is for people who like classical
music, but that’s in August.
Glastonbury is an outdoor festival, so it’s great when the weather is good and the
sun is shining. But British summers are very changeable, and it sometimes rains a lot
during the festival. However, the fans aren’t worried – they sing and dance in the rain
while the bands are playing. You don’t usually see sad faces or umbrellas at
Glastonbury when it rains.
It’s sometimes quite difficult to get tickets for the Glastonbury festival because lots of
people want to go to it. If you can’t get a ticket, you can always watch it on TV or on
the internet, or listen to it on the radio.

Every year people in many countries learn English. Some of them are young

Why do these all people learn English? It is not difficult to answer this question.
