Elements History November Assessment Revision Guide

Structure of Internal Assessment:

Section A: Short questions – factual recall. 10 marks.

Section B: Source based questions. You will need to use information


from a source, and you will also need to consider how reliable a source
is. 12 marks.

Section C: Extended writing. You will need to write in full paragraphs to


explain a number of different points, before reaching a conclusion. 8
marks.

Topics to revise:

Your main focus of revision should be the events in England before and
during 1066.
You should learn the following chronology:
9th Century onwards: Viking raids and settlement in England.
1016 King Cnut became King of England (he was later also King of
Denmark and Norway). Edward the Confessor fled to Normandy.
1051 Earl Godwin and the Godwin family rebelled against Edward the
Confessor.
1051 Edward the Confessor promised the English throne to William,
Duke of Normandy.
January 1066: King Edward the Confessor promised the English throne
to Harold Godwinson.
5th January 1066: King Edward the Confessor died. This sparked a
succession crisis (disagreement and confusion over who should be the
next king).
6th January 1066: Harold Godwinson crowned as King of England.
20th September 1066: Battle of Fulford – Harald Hardrada defeated Earls
Edwin and Morcar.
25th September 1066: Battle of Stamford Bridge – Harold Godwinson
defeated Harald Hardrada (end of Norwegian invasion – Harald
Hardrada was killed).
14th October 1066: Battle of Hastings – William of Normandy defeated
Harold Godwinson (who was killed in the battle).
25th December 1066: William of Normandy crowned as King of England.
You should also revise in detail:
The different claimants to the throne in 1066 – Harold Godwinson;
William, Duke of Normandy; Harald Hardrada, King of Norway; Edgar
the Atheling.
The events of 1066 itself and reasons why William of Normandy won the
Battle of Hastings.
