Do Not Be Discouraged!

Words from our PLABABLE team

Remember, that we too had to pass the PLAB exam.

Most of us passed back in 2016 where the exam
was much longer. In 2016, the exam consisted of
200 questions to be completed in 3 hours. It is now
180 questions to be completed in 3 hours.

There were not many social groups and there were

no online platforms to help with studying back then.

You now have the support of us (consultants, GPs

and senior registrars) who are dedicated to helping
you pass your PLAB 1 exam. So DO NOT be
discouraged! Form a study group and work hard!

PLABABLE
Tips on Flagging

Study Your Flag Questions Daily

Always flag the questions that you think you are

most likely to get wrong in the exam.

Ensure you go through them everyday and only

unflag them close to the exam once you are
confident that you would not make that mistake.

PLABABLE
Complete All Categories

One of the mistakes that candidates make is

believing that certain categories are less important
than others in the exam. They are all equally
important and so completing ALL the categories is
recommended.

PLABABLE
Resetting questions?

Resetting your account may NOT be the best course

of action for your revision. Your first attempt is in the
“practice by category” section. Your second attempt
would be the “timed mocks”. This means that you
have attempted every question we have twice. From
then on, you should be flagging the questions that
you are likely to get wrong and understand the
concept.

Resetting the question bank would allow you to do

the questions again but it would essentially mean
that you start to recognise key words of the
questions and go straight for an answer instead of
understanding the concept of why that is the answer.

Candidates who memorise questions instead of

understanding the concepts tend to fail because
questions are always twisted from what you are used
to.

Exam Hints & Tips

Plabable was the only question bank I practised for

my PLAB 1 exam.
The questions in exam were similar to the ones in
question bank. I will advise practising all the modules
at least twice before exam. It will also help you
become a better physician.
The mocks helps you manage your time in your
exam.
Do not go for multiple question banks! Stick to one
and doing it repeatedly will be more beneficial for
you.

time: 6 months.
I used Plabable for most of my journey & completed
the questions once before attempting 17 mocks.
Gems were invaluable since they provided crisp,
clear & easy-to-understand flash cards appropriately
written for challenging topics. They also saved a load
of time when I was looking to get some quick
revision done.
I would say that the Plabable questions are very
similar in complexity & depth when it comes to
creating questions similarly to what would be seen
on the real test. I improved my timing using the
mocks. The explanations & summaries in the
revision guides & answer descriptions helped me
broaden the scope of topics I was studying & it
helped me feel confident in answering. highly

happened in Ukraine, and we all had to split into
different regions and corners of the world.
I landed in the UK, and I had to go through PLAB to

Start reading a Gem and also open revision guides

the name of the subject you are reading currently.
For example, if you read palliative care, search with
the keywords palliative care in the search bar. You'll
find the revision guides related to palliative care.
Thus, read a topic from gems and revision guides
simultaneously. Then, answer the questions from the
subject-wise question bank. Therefore you can finish

I started my preparation 1.5 months before the exam

date (NOV 22). I took my leave for a month and was
constantly working before that. I didn’t have much
time and had a lot to cover.
I approached my preparation by reading Plabable
Gems of one category and then solving its questions
right after. You won’t remember a lot from your first
read, but the key here is the questions you get
wrong; refer back to them in the Gems and keep
re-reading the Gems.
After you reach a set of questions, say 80, you will
get the hang of it as the questions repeat but are
worded differently, so the more you keep referring
back to Gems, the better it’ll be for you to remember.

In the exam, questions are not repeated from
Plabable, but the concepts are the same no matter
how the question is worded, so allow yourself time to
grasp the concept and read the Plabable revision

mocks and always read the description of answers of
MCQs.

I have recently passed the exam with a mark of 155.

First of all, let me convey my gratitude for Plabable’s
hard work in providing us with such a good mcq
bank with up-to-date knowledge.
I studied only Plabable for the PLAB.
I did the Practice by Category mcqs first with all the
explanations.
Then I did all the mock tests available to practice the
timing, which I think is very important before you sit
the exam.
Identifying the keyword in an mcq and remembering
those is very important to save time in the exam.
I had only 2.5 months of preparation time but feel
like 4 months of preparation is better.
During the exam day, it's better to divide the paper
into 3 parts - first, second and third hour, with 60
mcqs per each.

Dear all candidates who are planning to give the

for and appearing in the exam.
1. Take time and give one read system-wise to
PLABABLE. We have each category like cardio, ER,
and endo likewise, read the question well and read
explanations in detail.
2. Do not forget to attend last minute revision course
with tutors of PLABABLE it’s highly recommended.
3. Before you appear for the exam, at least 3 times,
revise the course. Read Plabable Gem because as
much as you repeat, you get the concept in a better

6. For those students who are appearing for the
exam out of the country, please apply for the visa on

7. Exam is not very easy and not very tough, so stick
to Plabable. Understand the concept, read well,

9. One day before the exam, just relax, pray and

relax, take a warm bath, and eat well. It will go well
because you prepared it well! You have used all the
right resources. Sleep well, at least 7 hours.
10. When you are attempting any question in the
exam, you don’t have time to think and answer
because one question is = to 1 minute, so just read
well, choose the answer and move on. Don’t think
and waste time. Keep marking, and keep reading the
next question.
11. On the day of the exam, I took bananas; I
finished almost 5 bananas before entering to my
exam hall it gave me the energy I was full and didn’t
feel hungry. One of my friends took chocolates so
you can try this. Some people were going to the

Exam Hints & Tips

Passing PLAB 1 is doable using Plabable only, and I

highly recommend it and don’t advise using too
many resources because different resources can
have contradicting information, which in the end only
adds to you feeling confused and even more
anxious.
I only used Plabable to study, and I managed to
safely pass the exam in my first attempt with three
months of studying.
When I first started studying, I found that the amount
of information to study was quite overwhelming, and
I started to panic. But I only had 3 months to study,
so I needed a plan quickly. And basically, what I did
was I first attempted the questions in the categories
without first revising any notes; I wanted to test my
medical school knowledge and identify the topics
that I needed to revise more in-depth.

PLABABLE
Exam Hints & Tips

It’s okay if you don’t get above 70% for a category

because this is only an indicator that you perhaps
need more time to revise certain topics within the
section.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Simply make sure you
read the full explanations of the answers and take
time to read the revision guides, and make sure that
you UNDERSTAND and NOT MEMORISE!!! You
need to be able to INTEGRATE KNOWLEDGE!
After I finished all the categories, I did 7 practice
mocks. Again, if you don’t get above 70%, don’t
panic. Go back and read the revision guide on the
topics you are failing to understand. The questions in
the practice mocks are the same questions from the
question bank that you answered when you did the
different categories; therefore, you might simply just
be getting a higher score in the practice mocks
because your brain memorised or recognised the
answer.

Passed PLAB February 2023

PLABABLE
Exam Hints & Tips

So be cautious about how you interpret the 80% or

90% that you get for these.
The reason that I did not do all of the practice mocks
is that the questions were just a repetition from the
question banks, and I felt like I needed to challenge
my knowledge and actually gauge what I still needed
to brush up on. So I then did the Seeds, which
comes with the Gems package. The Gems cards are
nicely summarised, the Clinchers are also good, and
I used the last two to condense key information
about the topics.
Lastly, on the last week before my exam, I attempted
the big mock, and the score I got for the big mock
was very close to the score I got for the actual exam.
I scored higher in the exam, obviously because I
went back and revised some topics I saw I was weak
in during the big mock.

My tip for the preparation of exam is that try to

complete all your syllabus in time and try to solve as
many questions as you can while you study.
Try to do questions at least twice and make sure that
you are thorough with your subject.
After completing your questions and study material
for which Plabable gems are quite useful the next
thing would be mock exams.
Try to complete your mock exam with at least 15-30
min to spare so that you get good time management
skills.That will definitely help you.
So in a nutshell make your concepts thorough.
Try to understand the concept rather than mugging it
And please pay special attention for time

Hello, my name is Dr Varthini Karvannan

I passed the plab 1 exam yesterday 🎉
A huge thanks to Plabable team ❤
I used only plabable for my entire preparation.
To be really honest , I purchased medrevisions and
plabverse, but I found a lot of errors and outright
copied material from plabable revision guides and
explanations. So that’s when I decided to stick only
to plabable. I attended two Webinars prior to the
exam.
So coming to the main preparation, I started
preparing exactly 2 months before the exam.I started
reading the gems chapter wise and then attempted
the questions. I kept doing this until I completed all
the categories. Then instead of resetting the
account, I purchased a new account and did
category wise for big chapters alone.
Took my own notes while solving the questions and
in the last 10 days , I did one plabable mock and one
big mock.

My go to material was the Gems, I felt it was very

precise and all the bullet points were covered in it. I
was reading only the gems for the last two days. The
November exam was actually on the tougher side
but still 70% of the exam content was covered in
plabable.

The October big mock passing score was 116 and

the real exam minimum score was also 116.

Exam Hints & Tips

Plabable has been my biggest asset for plab 1 prep.

Advice would be:
1. Read the gems for one subject and then solve all
the questions. And take your time with it really
understand the explanations given. Those
explanations give a lot of insight to how you should
modify your problem solving strategy.
2. Have plenty of time to solve mocks. Take one
mock once you've finished solving all your questions
then on the basis of that mock figure out your weak
subjects or areas. Revise them and then revise
whatever you feel are weak areas for you.
Then give another mock.
3. I would actually suggest buying big mocks as they
are not repeated questions that you've already
solved before.
4. Last minute Webinar and hardest question
Webinar is actually a life saver. It helped me avoid
many many mistakes I could've made when giving
my exam.

● 3 months at least
● If you’re working with on-calls, it’s better to start
much earlier so you can stay consistent with the
little you accomplish every day

Qbank:
● Plabable subscription (with the gems)

Initiative:
● Start off by noting down all the topics with the no.
Of Qs in each category and then divide time for
all categories accordingly
● Do 1 mock as your beginning mock and see
where you stand so you know what you’ll be
building upon.

Exam Hints & Tips

What to do:
● Read the explanations of all Qs given below each
in order to make the concept stronger.
● Flag difficult/ incorrect Qs as you go along so you
can get back to them later in your revision
● If you find it easy to study notes, it’s always better
to write your own little notes as you complete a
category focusing mainly on the important/
difficult things and on the Qs you got wrong.
● Try to do Plabable twice (really depends on your
concepts/learning, but definitely worth it)
● As you revise topics, unflag Qs as they become
easier
● One tip is to track your daily accomplishments
and keep a weekly or fortnightly goal so you can
reflect on where you stand.

Close to the BIG DAY:

● Now that the anxiety is high, retaining information
is difficult, don’t learn any new concepts.
● Rather revise what you’ve done and focus on the
high yield topics and points.
● Always attempt the mocks with a timer. The
importance of time management cannot be
stressed enough.
● Attempt mocks more often near to the exam with
a timer and on an OMR sheet with an HB pencil.
That will give a true feel of the exam and once
you’ve practiced it enough, minor things won’t
make you anxious on the day.
● Check your mocks, focus on your mistakes and
revise those topics carefully. It’s better to make
mistakes, learn from them before the actual test.
● Try to attempt a big mock near the exam as those
Qs will be different from the Q bank and serve as
a taster for the exam. This will also help you
evaluate where you stand.

Exam Hints & Tips

● You can’t possibly imagine how hard and

time-consuming for an examiner to write a
question properly, a question that could carry
hints, leading and misleading information for you
to solve in under a minute. Focus and don’t take
any questions lightly.
● You have to go through plabable gems first and
then solve its questions in the bank. With every
repetition you will learn something new, either
missed or not fully understood previously.
● As you solve questions, don’t be misled with a
high score in each category without learning the
idea behind each question and why the other
choices were wrong. Getting the idea is the goal
of studying to get the right choice in the exam.

PLABABLE
Exam Hints & Tips

● Solve some math questions daily. Train your

brain to deal with numbers and calculations as
fast as you can to help you solve epidemiology
questions. They can be the most
time-consuming.
● If time got you on your exam day, flip the exam
notebook to its end and solve it backwards. The
very last questions are sometimes shorter
because they know you are running out of time.
Long or short, they are all one mark each so
better solve as many as you can.
● Don’t focus on some chapters as they might yield
a higher number of questions. We had more
epidemiology and genetics questions than most
of the so-called high yield chapters like
paediatrics or gynaecology or neurology etc...

Exam Hints & Tips

1. Build your foundation with Plabable gems and

then go on to solve the category wise questions.
Repeat this cycle as many times as possible.

2. Be on the lookout for new questions which are

constantly added on by Plabable. Do not worry
about the NICE guidelines so much as you will
find the necessary resources on Plabable.

3. Focus on building the concept and not learning

the question. In that way, you can handle
unfamiliar questions in the exam with confidence.

4. Practise mocks from the first day, with a timer.

The first mock will give an idea about where you
stand. Plan your study schedule accordingly.

5. Attend the relevant webinars and the revision

courses, if you need to. They are very helpful.

7. Aim to go through the paper so that you can

attempt all the questions. Don’t dwell on the ones
you find difficult or confusing or time consuming
(epidemiology or genetics e.g.)..come back to
them after answering the rest.

TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY.

Finally, don't overdo it. PLAB is a simple exam..not

Exam Hints & Tips

1. Understand the concepts. Focus to make sure you

fully understand the language of the question.
When you practise from the Question Bank, do not
just jump on the clinchers but instead understand
what they are asking to ensure you get the most
accurate answer. When you understand the
importance of these steps, concepts and
guidelines, there is no room for confusion.

2. Developing insight is very important. Answering a

question correctly does not always mean that you
understand it. For example ECG and ABG
analysis, take time to understand these topics to
ensure you answer them quickly in the exam.

3. Emergency Medicine is very confusing at first

when you do not understand the basic algorithm
of the subject but once you do, getting these
correct in the exam is highly rewarding.

Exam Hints & Tips

Where to begin is the real question…It's very taxing

and daunting for anyone no matter how good they
are in studies to appear for an exam especially
which has limited number of attempts.

To prepare for PLAB 1 the first thing you need is to

believe in yourself that you will clear the exam and
even if you don’t, you will not get disheartened as it’s
not the end of the world!!

Some honest tips would be :

1. Start preparing at least 3 months prior to your
exam date.

2. Firstly go through the Plabable question bank

cover to cover along with Plabable GEMS of the
subject you are doing at the time !!

3. Start with the MOCKS to get another run through

Read the whole question in its entirety and try to
understand what is being asked.

3. Directly mark the answer on the OMR sheet

rather than the question booklet, it saves plenty
of time.

4. You can mark the question which you have a

9. After the exam is over don’t change any of the

PLABABLE
Exam Hints & Tips

(1) Focus on mistakes

After each mock exam, spend time to analyse why
you got a question wrong and try to prevent making
the same mistake again. Be extremely deliberate
about this. If you focus on this, you will see
incremental improvements. By the time you have
completed your last mock, you will be much more
comfortable with topics that used to be difficult.

(2) The final days

A few days before the exam, your focus should shift
from cramming to consolidation. Trying to add too
many new information to a saturated brain could
make you feel anxious and uncertain. You don’t want
to freak out in the exam. You should still be learning
a few new things, but you’ll benefit greatly doubling
down on the information you already know and
removing minor uncertainties. You’ll head into that
exam focus yet relaxed and that’s always a good
thing.

(3) Before the exam

Be sure to develop a quick system of reviewing
topics that you want to review quickly before the
exam. For me, I used the hashtag #BeforeExam on
my notes on Google Docs. By searching the hashtag
I was able to get a quick refresher for topics like
paediatric milestones and epidemiology formulas.

(4) Last line first

Reading the last line of a sentence can save you a
lot of time. Some questions provide a very lengthy
stem only to ask a question that could be answered
without reading the stem. Don’t believe me? Try it on
your next exam. I certainly remember a few
situations like this on my November 2020 paper.

(5) Know when and how to clinch

PLAB 1 is a manageable exam however the time

constraints can make it tricky. Get familiar with
clinchers, they are your best friends. Be careful not
to get carried away with certain questions.
Sometimes one word can make an entire difference.

I found this especially important for genetics

questions where the gender or the word affected,
carrier or healthy can make a world of difference.
Through practise, you’ll know exactly which question
to take an extra 10 seconds on just to make sure you
don’t trip yourself up. Absolutely worth it.

Exam Hints & Tips

One of the most common question asked by the

candidates appearing for PLAB is the number of
hours they need to study for the exam.

Please be aware that it is not the number of hours

but the quality of hours that you need to devote. I
personally follow timer method in which I set a timer
for 25-30 minutes with a 10 minutes break in
between. Keep yourself away from all the
distractions and please put your phone on silent
mode or switch it off while reading if you really want
to focus.

Do as many questions as possible but don’t learn

them but grasp the concept. Always remember, no
matter how much you study you’ll get some
questions wrong and it does not matter until you’re
scoring more than 70 percent which is slightly more
than the actual passing score required.

7. Keep the penultimate day to breathe, relax and to

not indulge beyond a few bookmarked highlights,

8. Consistency with spaced revision is the key

Having cleared the exam with a hectic full-time job

and in the first attempt, one thing I can assure you
is that PLAB 1 is an exam that is as easy as you let
it be, given your preparation is systematic. At the
time of booking, I’d roughly 3 months left for the
exam, and realistically 5 hours a day to prepare,
keeping aside work and routine household chores.
I’m in the habit of breaking down and bullet listing
any upcoming goals and this time the first one was
to give a random mock off PLABABLE, even before
touching the QB. With just my basic clinical
knowledge and a few guesswork, I could manage a
meagre 50-60%. Knowing where I stood, I made a
timeline for the next 1 month which involved
brushing through the entire QB alongside the
revision guides and making my own notes.

I made it a point to bookmark only those questions

I’ll revise 1 day before the exam which helped
against an unnecessary load of them. One round
overshot my timeline, as always, and took me 45
days. I spent the next one and half months revising
the Revision Guides with bookmarked questions,
solving the newly added questions, attempting a few
more mocks and tweaking my notes likewise. I also
actively tried to remove a question from my
bookmarked list, if that concept was clear from
spaced repetition, thus reducing my burden over the
last days. I then took a break from work to
religiously attend the then 3-day revision course by
Sze and Adam, which helped consolidate my
preparation and correct a few misconceptions. The
pandemic was raging at its peak around this time,
and my exam was cancelled owing to government
restrictions.
I was momentarily downhearted but fortunate
enough to book a new date that was available 2
months away.

The wonderfully curated GEMS dropped in the

meantime. Systematic revision with mocks
continued. The mocks which used to consume
02:45 hours (for 180 questions) improved to 02:00
hours by the 10th mock, with 85-95% in each. Then
came the Big Mock which was a huge reality check
and took me a whole 02:50 hours to complete.

I didn’t keep much for the penultimate day, other

than a few highlights off my notes, few bookmarked
questions and GEMS. The main exam had me
spending 40 - 60 seconds per question and yet left
me with 3 minutes to spare at last.

This brings me to my last piece of advice. Even if

you’re thorough with a particular question, give it a
focused quick read before jumping to the answer.
Time taken to revise or erase is time lost for another
question. To summarise, 5 months with PLABABLE
helped me breeze past the cut-off score. If someone
like me can do it, you’ve no reason not to.

Trust me, PLAB is an easy exam if you know the art

of Clinchers and Time Management.

1. Many questions will be extremely similar to each

other but your clincher will help you to differentiate
between the two. So having your own clinchers for
every topic is a must.

2. A lot of questions are repeated from previous

exams.. recalls is also a MUST.

3. Time management is the art you need to be

having for the plab exam.. not all questions will need
a minute exact.. the new questions will definitely
need more.. and hence you need to be familiar with
the recalls and your clinchers to be able to answer
the familiar ones in 30 seconds to balance it out.

Keep an eye on the timer. Most of your practice

would have happened on a computer where you can
select the option and move to the next question. But
in the exam, you will have to enter your option
choice into an OMR sheet (the sheet with answer
options where you darken the right option) and this
takes time.

Keep around 15-20 mins at the end to enter your

choice into these sheets (yes, it will take that long) or
if you have the habit of marking them as soon as you
have solved a question, ensure you take no more

2. Also for the purpose of easing this complexity,

Whenever you encounter a question that you are

not sure or you don’t know make sure to use the
exclusion method to mark an answer. Please
don’t mark an answer blindly. Out of 5 options 1
option will be completely absurd and not related to
the question. Now you are left with 4 options, if you
can exclude 2 options with your knowledge and
exclusion process you are finally left 2 options. Your
chances of marking a correct answer increased
from 20% to 50%. There are very high chances that
you would mark a correct answer by this process
rather than taking a wild guess.
Sometimes the first 2 lines of the question is exactly
