Up
until this point you’ve been feeding your baby breastmilk or formula whenever they’ve
shown signs of hunger aka, on demand. You’ll continue to offer access to breast-milk or formula but with
solid foods, you’ll want to transition to “kitchen is open” and “kitchen is closed” times.
This will set your baby up for toddlerhood (hmm and maybe even adulthood!) when it’s important to avoid
allowing your child to graze all day long and instead develop an appetite for those meals and snacks.
An appetite, or appeal for food, is important for being interested in and willing to try new foods!
As your baby gradually eats solid food, and you add more eating opportunities throughout the day, they will
naturally and gradually drink less and less breastmilk or formula on demand. Not to mention, they will likely
be sleeping for longer stretches at a time.
Before we show you the schedules, it’s SUPER important to note that these are just outlined as a starting
point to give you an idea of what it might be like to gradually add more solid food opportunities throughout
the day. The idea is not to follow these to as a formal regiment, but rather use them as a guide to figure
out what works best for you and your baby’s rhythm. Take from this resource only what serves you.
Life and parenthood is far too short to be obsessing over schedules, from one mama to another, trust us.
Some babies need to eat more often and require 3 meals and 3 snacks by 12 months. Other babies go
longer in between and may only need 3 meals. Follow your baby’s signals. Don’t be afraid to experiment
with adding and dropping snack opportunities to see what works well for your baby!
Continue to nurse/bottlefeed on demand; around 9 months you can offer solid food first and then nurse/bottlefeed to encourage
intake of solid foods; this isn’t a hard rule, just a suggestion that may work for your baby. This resource does not replace medical
advice you may have received otherwise.
