MGMT 590 Online, Policy Formulation Strategy and Administration

Morning, Afternoon, and around 9pm. Urgent questions
can be texted to the Office Phone.
Course Restrictions/Prerequisites: Must be enrolled in one of the following Levels: Graduate.
Must be enrolled in one of the following Majors: Health Care Administration or Business Administration

Course Description: Capstone course. Emphasis is on integrated application of MBA core course
concepts. Problem analysis and decision making at an integrative level are stressed.

Course Learning Objectives:

Objective 1 The students will gain basic knowledge of strategic analysis, strategic
formulation and strategic implementation.

Objective 2 The students will learn to integrate new concepts related to business strategy
with those acquired in other classes taken during the course of their business
management studies.

Objective 3 The students will better understand the job of a manager and develop a general
management orientation.

Objective 4 The students will develop better problem solving and planning skills and
become able to analyze broad, organization-wide problems.

Objective 5 The students will develop and practice appropriate research, writing and
communications skills.

Grading Policy: All grades will be posted on Moodle.

Introduction = 10 points
Chapter Assignments = 100 points
Chapter Quizzes = 50 points
Capstone Slide Deck = 30 points
Reflection = 10 points
Total = 200 points

The scores below correspond to the following grades.

A = 89.50 – 100, B = 79.50 – 89.49, C = 69.50 – 79.49, D = 59.50 – 69.49, F = less than 59.50
Students will not pass the course with a D or F and will not be able to graduate.

Communication: During the semester, I will communicate with you via Moodle email and university
email. Your address in Moodle is usually the same as your address in UL Web Mail, which is the email
address assigned to you by UL. If you prefer another address, you must put a forwarding address in UL
Web Mail. In the event of an unplanned closure, this course will continue on Moodle.

Statement Regarding Email as Official Means of Communication: Email is the university approved
form of communication. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that they receive e-mail sent using
Moodle.

Mutual Expectations and Feedback: We should strive to adhere to the following expectations. This is
mutual, so we are all accountable for these, including your instructor. Please feel free to provide feedback
to me if your expectations are not being met. I encourage and greatly value your constructive feedback. If
you have questions or concerns regarding the course, please be proactive in contacting me. Especially for

any lengthy conversation (even during office hours), it is helpful to schedule an appointment to ensure we
have an uninterrupted block of time. Each of you has a specific goal in this class. I expect you to be
proactive in discussing issues that may arise in regards to your progress.

Course Student/Student Interaction Expectations: I expect you to behave in a courteous, professional


manner during class. Failure to behave in a courteous, professional manner will result in your removal
from class or a reduction in your class grade. Again, students are expected to actively contribute each and
every class. With that, I expect a respectful and welcoming classroom culture. Act respectfully toward
others when they are talking. Do not engage in conversations with others when anyone is speaking.

Late Work Policy: Late Assignments will not be accepted. The deadlines for assignments, quizzes and
other work are announced at the beginning of the semester. All assignments must be completed by the
deadline.

Academic Honesty Policy: Each student is expected to adhere to the standards of academic honesty
which are stated in the UL student handbook. Prohibitions against cheating and plagiarism will be
enforced in accord with the policies regarding academic honesty as stated in the handbook. No form of
academic dishonesty will be tolerated.

Professional Expectations: This is a professional business class, and all should conduct themselves
appropriately. Most correspondence will be handled by email, which must be created and sent in a
professional format. Please be sure that any email contains your class and section number in the subject
area. Ask short questions in complete sentences using correct punctuation and grammar. Close with your
name. Do not wait until the last minute to send emails; plan ahead and allow adequate time for a response.

Students with Special Needs: There is free, confidential help on campus for students with Learning
Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, Psychological Disabilities, and/or ADHD. Please contact the Office of
Disability Services (ODS) located in the Conference Center, Room 126 in person or at 482-5252 or

information on ODS services and on eligibility requirements.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures: A map of this floor is posted near the elevator marking the
evacuation route and the Designated Rescue Area. This is an area where emergency service personnel will
go first to look for individuals who need assistance in exiting the building. Students who need assistance
should identify themselves to the instructor.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is expected. Unless you present me with an ULL sanctioned reason for
missing class, I do not fill you in if you miss class. Hence, if you miss class, I do not need to know why. I
suggest that you talk with your group about sharing information in the event one of you misses class.

Course Time-on-Task Expectations: The average student should expect to spend one hour per day
reading the assigned chapters and reviewing notes. It is also expected that students will spend five hours
per week, on average, doing class assignments. Due to the fact that not all students have the same talents
or previous course experiences the amount of the time that each student spends working outside of class
can vary. Some students need more time studying, others may need less time.

Food/Laptops/Cellphones/Recording Expectations: Please follow university rules regarding food


policy; I have no personal preference so long as you are not distracting others. Please minimize time spent
on your phone. Use of your computer for class related purposes is acceptable. Pictures, video and audio
recording are NOT allowed in class without prior written permission.

UL Lafayette COVID-19 Syllabus Policies and Guidelines

Student Code of Conduct: COVID-19: The University aims to fulfill its mission while protecting the health and safety of our
students and campus community at large. This includes taking steps to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19. The
University will adhere to the orders, proclamations, and regulations of the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor-President of
Lafayette, Louisiana, as well as guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) and the Louisiana
Department of Health (“LDH”) regarding COVID-19. This impacts the expectations of all students as the University continues to
make public healthinformed decisions to protect health and safety on campus. Students should read and understand the addendum
to the Code of Student Conduct regarding COVID-19 and Public Health-Informed Policies, and any updates thereto.

COVID-19 Mask Policy for Academic Areas: To assist in decreasing the spread of the COVID-19 virus, it is the University's
policy that all students, faculty, and staff are required to wear masks or face coverings which completely cover the nose and
mouth areas while inside any academic building including classrooms, labs, studios, offices, hallways, and stairways. Failure to
wear a mask is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and such violation will be forwarded to the Dean of Students for
action.

Students who have concerns about wearing masks due to a disability or medical condition may discuss a modification to the
University's mask policy with the Office of Disability Services. In order to discuss a modification for this semester, students must
first register with Disability Services. All registrants will be contacted to arrange a virtual meeting for further discussion. Learn

COVID-19 Attendance: If you are experiencing any signs or symptoms associated with COVID-19 (refer to the most recent
Centers for Disease Control [CDC] guidance on possible symptoms), do not come to class or to campus. First, contact Student
Health Services (337-482-1293) or your medical provider, then contact your instructors to inform them of your situation and
discuss possible arrangements and ways to keep up with the courses. If you do not feel well for any reason and are staying home,
including for symptoms of COVID-19, fill out the Anticipated or Unplanned Absence Form.

If you are required to self-isolate or self-quarantine because of COVID-19, do not come to class or to campus. All students who
are required to self-isolate or self-quarantine because of COVID-19 must complete the Student COVID-19 Quarantine and
Isolation Form (they do not need to complete the Anticipated or Unplanned Absence form) and email their instructors for support
and resources.

Do not wait until you are behind to reach out to your instructors. Options will vary depending on when during the term you are
unable to participate, how much class time and coursework is missed, and the nature of the course. Options may include, but not
be limited to, transitioning to learning and testing remotely during your absence; in extreme cases, withdrawing from the course,
or receiving a grade of incomplete. Contact your instructor and academic advisor with any questions.

For requests to move from on-campus to remote learning for reasons related to
COVID-19, a student initiates a written request to the faculty member. The faculty member considers the students request,
learning objectives of the course, and educational technology available to determine if an arrangement for remote instruction is
feasible. If an agreement is not possible then the student may bring the request to the department head of the course for a
resolution, then to the academic chain of approval.

Faculty Guidelines: Academic departments will precure a supply of masks through Facilities Management to make available to
faculty for students who do not have a mask. If a student is required to wear a mask but is not wearing one as required in
academic areas, faculty will provide a mask to the student and inform the student that it is a violation of the Code of Student
Conduct not to wear a mask. If the student does not use the mask, the student will be required to leave the classroom and the
faculty will advise them that they will report it as a violation of the Code of Student Conduct. The faculty will complete the
Community Reporting Form found on the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities website. Any class missed due to a
student’s failure to adhere to the requirement of wearing a mask will be recorded as an unexcused absence.

The student will not be allowed into the academic setting until clearance has been provided from the Office of Student Rights and
Responsibilities. Students should stay in contact via e-mail with their instructors/professors pending clearance.

Health or Safety Risk: The University may request or require a student to leave campus when that student’s continued presence
on campus poses a health or safety risk for community members.

ETS Exam: Every student is required to take the ETS exam. This comprehensive, exit exam is required for successful completion
of MGMT 590 and your degree program in the Moody College of Business Administration. Failure to take the exam will result in
an Incomplete for the course until the exam is completed. The MCOBA accreditation is closely tied to the results of this exam, so
it is very important you take it seriously. More details to follow.
