A Message from the NDPhA EVP

Greetings to all, Hopefully this communication finds you Most importantly, have fun, enjoy yourself, relax a little
in good health and spirits. As you know, the ND Annual bit and don’t be shy! If you have never attended the ND
Pharmacy Convention is right around the corner. I have Pharmacy Convention, please consider doing so. We
seen many of you and visited with many of you over know how to have a lot of fun and we make sure “fun”
the years at our conventions. I truly enjoy attending the is on the agenda! Your fellow colleagues from Minot
annual convention for many reasons. Social media might and surrounding communities put on a great convention
keep you connected to your peers who are both local and do a superb job of hosting the event. Thank you
and “from away”. However, there is no substitution for convention committee and others who have helped put
meeting someone IRL (in real life)! Conventions allow for this year’s convention together. There are a lot of moving
opportunities to mix, mingle, form new relationships and parts, conversations and collaborative efforts that need
strengthen existing ones. Remember the scene in Dead to take place!
Poet’s Society when Robin Williams invites students to
stand on their desks to get a fresh perspective? There is Step out of your comfort zone. Come socialize, learn
something to be said about learning and networking in something new, gain a new perspective, relax and have
a new space or looking for a new perspective. If you fun! I hope to see many of you during the convention in
are finding yourself in a rut, sitting in the same office Minot. Until then, take care and remember together we
or being in the same building day after day, it might do are stronger.
you good to get away to help with new ideas and fresh
thinking. A dull axe won’t cut a tree nearly as effectively
as a sharp one. Respectfully,

Mike Schwab
Attending conventions also require or force you to break
out of your comfort zone a little bit as well. There is
nothing like a room full of like-minded people. There is NDPhA EVP
something to be said about people who are willing to
take time away from the office or their families to learn
something new and interact with colleagues. Sometimes
it’s about taking a selfie with someone you have not seen
in a long time or with someone who’s influenced you
and your practice. Sometimes it’s about sharing an idea,
making a new connection or visiting with mentors. Invest
in yourself and your profession.

Aldevron Tower dedication set for May 1 at NDSU

By Carol Renner, Office of the Dean, Marketing/Communication Coordinator, NDSU College of Health Professions

North Dakota State University will celebrate the opening of

the new Aldevron Tower on campus on Friday, May 1, with a
dedication set for 11 a.m. The six-story privately funded building
brings the College of Health Professions into a single complex
connected to Sudro Hall.

The fourth floor of the new Aldevron Tower is dedicated to the

NDPhA Pharmacy Practice Lab. The space includes community
and institutional practice areas, simulated sterile and non-sterile
compounding laboratories, access to patient exam rooms for
medication therapy management, telepharmacy and much
more.

“As future clinicians, we’re going to be serving the community,

and it’s nice to see the community giving us that support up
front, so that when we graduate, we’ll be able to return the favor
to them,” said Jarod Burnside, second year pharmacy student.

“Thanks to generous donors and the support of alumni and

friends of Health Professions, students now have interprofessional
learning facilities designed to prepare them to be team ready and
practice ready when they graduate,” said Charles Peterson, dean
of the School of Pharmacy and College of Health Professions at
NDSU.

Additional activities with the ND Board of Pharmacy and
Pharmacists Association are possible in the new space. The new
facility reflects the ABCs (Association, Board and College) at
work, once again creating unique opportunities for the profession
and state.

“I would like to thank our donors for donating money to this

gorgeous new space that we have,” said Kayla Hoistad, second
year pharmacy student. “We have so much new technology that
we can use. It will help us become better pharmacists in the
future and we’d just like to thank you for the money that you’ve
donated to us.”

In addition to instructional and lab spaces in the new Aldevron

Tower, it was designed to be student centric with many student
study spaces on each floor, computer stations and welcoming
spaces to promote interprofessional education.

The Bowl of Hygeia award program was originally developed by the A. H. Robins Company to recognize pharmacists across the nation
for outstanding service to their communities. Selected through their respective professional pharmacy associations, each of these
dedicated individuals has made uniquely personal contributions to a strong, healthy community. We offer our congratulations and thanks
for their high example. The American Pharmacists Association Foundation, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the
state pharmacy associations have assumed responsibility for continuing this prestigious recognition program. All former recipients are
encouraged to maintain their linkage to the Bowl of Hygeia by emailing current contact information to awards@naspa.us. The Bowl of
Hygeia is on display in the APhA History Hall located in Washington, DC.
