Problem 27.

It takes a small jet plane 4 hours less than it takes a propeller driven plane to travel from Manila to
Bangkok. The jet plane averages 637kph while the propeller plane averages 273kph. How far is it from
Manila to Bangkok?

We will use the equation for distance which is D=RT

D=RT

Let x be the time

D=637x

D=273(x+40)

Since they cover the same distance then we can say that 637x =273(x+4)

637x =273(x+4)

637x =273x + 1092

We transpose it to 1092=637x – 273x

As we know if we transpose an equation the sign changes

1092=637x – 273x

1092=364x

We find a number than we can divide to both of them that will cancel 364 and that is 364 itself.

1092 364 x
=
364 364
364 x
We cancel
364
1092 364 x
=
364 364
1092
=3
364
X=3

4+3=7

273x7=1911
7-4=3

637x3=1911 The distance from Manila to Bangkok is 1911km
