Diet: I recommend feeding a minimally processed/fresh food diet (balanced raw or cooked diet) for

health and behavioural reasons. There are many options for premade frozen raw as well as cooked diets
that you can purchase at pet stores or order online. Some of the raw brands that I use are Big Country
Raw, Naturawls, Karnivor, and Pur Evolution . For training, I usually use freeze dried raw dog food
because it is nutritionally complete and highly appetizing: either Formule Raw, Hurraw, Smack, Stella
and Chewy's, K9 Natural, or Ziwi Peak. Coupon code for Forumule Raw when you order online:

and use for training.

Here are studies showing the beneficial health effects of feeding a fresh food diet alone or in addition to
a dry diet:

You can also supplement a high quality kibble diet with small amounts of meat, eggs, steamed veggies,
kefir, fish oil and organs. For kibble, some of the brands I like are Farmina and Carna4 . Avoid diets high
in carbohydrates like rice and corn, as it may result in increased inflammation and hyperactivity. Here is
an excellent webinar on the role of nutrition in canine behaviour. Rotate foods to avoid development of
intolerance to specific proteins. The greater the variety of food, the less likely she will be to have a
reaction to a new food. Here is a webinar on allergies and intolerances in dogs. Keep in mind, that the
idea that a dog should only eat one food, is part of brand marketing. Maintain a healthy weight (between
4 and 5 on body conditioning chart) to avoid joint/ligament problems in the future. Spade and neutered
dogs require fewer calories, than intact dogs. The suggested calories are a starting point, which has to be
adjusted based on body score. Here is a good calorie calculator.

If you are preparing your own food, it is very important that it is nutritionally balanced. This is a good
overview of the nutrients that you have to balance. Do not follow any recipes which do not include a
source of calcium (bones or powdered eggshell). There are multiple online recipe makers that can help
you balance your dog’s food.
