istreated and contaminated the environment that sustains
For years now, humans have
them. The list of issues surrounding our environment go on, but there are three major ones that
affect the majority of them overall: climate change, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
Climate change is happening now, and it’s the most serious threat to life on our planet.
Human activities are the main causes to this global threat. The rising levels of CO2 and other
greenhouse gases have caused an increase in average global temperatures, extreme weather
events, rising sea levels and other negative changes. These changes are directly and indirectly
affecting all life forms.
‘Water pollution is a growing problem globally. Large industries including those that
make chemicals and plastics dump a large amount of waste into the water. Human waste and
rubbish also ends up in the oceans and lakes. This widespread problem of water pollution is
jeopardizing our health. Unsafe water kills more people each year than war and all other forms
of violence combined.
Biodiversity helps maintain the balance of the ecosystem and provides biological
resources which are crucial for our existence. Habitat destruction, climate change, pollution,
secondary extinction and introduced species are a few ways in which humans are damaging the
biodiversity of this planet.
“Awareness and adaption are two key steps towards conserving the environment. Each
one of us can and should do their bit to curb the effects of these environmental issues and ensure
that our future generations have a healthy planet to live.

Question 1 (5 points): Read the following text.
Climate change represents a major threat to life on Earth, but some people argue that we
need to accept it rather than try to stop it. I completely disagree with this opinion, because
[believe that we still have time to solve this problem and reduce the human impact on the
Earth’s climate.
There are various measures that governments and individuals could take to prevent
climate change. Governments could introduce laws to limit the carbon dioxide emissions
that lead to global warming. They could impose “green taxes” on drivers, airline
companies and other polluters, and they could invest in renewable energy production
from solar, wind or water power. As individuals, we should also try to limit our
contribution to climate change, by becoming more energy efficient, by flying less, and by
using bieyeles and public transport
If instead of taking the above measures we simply try to live with climate change, I
believe that the consequences will be very bad. To give just one example, I am not
optimistic that we would be able to cope with even a small rise in sea levels. Millions of
people would be displaced by flooding. These people would lose their homes and their
jobs, and they would be forced to move to nearby cities or pethaps to other countries. The
potential for human suffering would be huge, and its likely that we would see outbreaks
of disease and famine, as well as increased homelessness and poverty.
In conclusion, it is clear to me that we must address the problem of climate change, and I
disagree with those who argue that we can find ways to live with it.
