SHIP-SPECIFIC BALLAST WATER MGMT TRAINING

Familiarization with the Ballast Water Mgmt Plan


The Staff Captain shall ensure the trainees are familiarized with the below sections of the ship-specific
Ballast water management plan. After each discussion, the Staff Captain shall ask questions to ensure the
training is effective and understood.

Upon successful and complete training delivery, the staff captain shall record the training completion for
each trainee in GLADIS. This will then sync to the trainee’s record in CPS within 24-48 hours.

Sections of the BWMP to be reviewed/familiarized as part of this training are summarized into the below
guidance and dicussion points.
Section 1 – Introduction and Purpose
Highlight the importance of the BWMP
Explain the requirement of maintaining a BWMP (IMO and USCG/VGP EPA)
Indicate ship-specific applicability – D2 compliance and type of BWTS installed onboard
Describe who approves the BWMP (class/flag)

Section 2 – Vessel Particulars


Review the vessel particulars section of the BWMP

Section 3 – Description of the Ballast System


Use drawings/capacity plan to explain:
Number of ballast tanks
Number of healing tanks
Number of ballast pumps and locations
BWTS details (maker, type, and treatment principle)

Section 4 – Ballast Water Management Operations


Discuss the current ship ballast water operations and the method of ballast water management (D2)
Describe the locations where the ship currently/normally conducts ballasting/deballasting (refer to
the ship Environmental Schedule as guidance)

Section 5 – Ballast Water Management System Details


Review details of the ballast water treatment system (BWTS) installed on the ship (use the table in
the dedicated section of the BWMP for reference)
Discuss the operation of the BWTS
Type of modes and operations (IMO v/s USCG)
Applicability of each mode
Principle of operation of the BWTS
What to do in case of a failure of BWTS (reporting requirements)
Discuss normal operating parameters of the BWTS
Describe limitations of the system
Explain the procedure to be followed while ballasting
Explain the procedure to be followed while de-ballasting
Review different types of shutdown of the BWTS (normal and emergency)

Section 5 – Ballast Water Management System Details (cont'd)
Discuss bypass of the BWTS
Review control and monitoring equipment of the BWTS
Highlight handling of untreated ballast water in pipelines and tanks
Explain filling and emptying heeling tanks
Explain flushing procedures
Describe BWTS alarms and warning
Discuss maintenance of the BWTS

Section 6 – Safety Procedures for the Ship and Crew


Review and discuss:
Any PPE to be worn while handling BWTS and associated maintenance
Precautionary practices
Non-release/minimal release of ballast water
Discharge to reception facilities
Procedure for safe tank entry

Section 7 – Contingency Measures


Review specific contingency measures that currently apply to the ship (refer to dedicated section
of the BWMP)

Section 8 – Sediment Management


Discuss the current process of sediment management on board the ship

Section 9 – Biofouling Management


Provide a brief description of the ship biofouling management plan

Section 14 – Recordkeeping and Reporting Requirements


Highlight current ballast water reporting applicable to the ship's itinerary (NBIC, port
specific, etc.)
Explain how and when to make entries in the Ballast Water Record Book (BWRB)
and in the NAPA E-log
