MAXIMA AND MINIMA

A closed right cylindrical tank is to have a capacity of 128 π m3. Find the
dimensions of the tank that will require the least amount of material in
making it.
The volume of open box with a square base is 4,000 cm3. Find the
dimensions of the box if the box if the material used to make the box
is a minimum.
Find the height of the right circular cylinder of maximum volume that
can be inscribed in sphere of radius 15 cm.
Find the volume of the largest right circular cylinder that can be cut
from a circular cone of radius 6 cm and height 9 cm.
Find the dimension of the largest rectangle that can be inscribed in the
ellipse 19 x 2+16 y 2 =144. The sides of the rectangle are parallel to the axes
of the ellipse.
RELATED RATES
A ladder 6m long leans against a vertical wall. The lower end of the
ladder is moved away from the wall at the rate of 2m/min. Find the
rate change of the area formed by the wall, the floor and the ladder
when the lower end is 4m from the wall.
A boy 5ft tall is walking away from a street light at the rate of 3ft/sec.
If the light is 12ft above the level ground, determine (a) the rate at
which the tip of his shadow is lengthening, (b) the rate at which the
tip of his shadow is moving and (c) the rate at which his head is
receding from the light when he is 24ft from the point directly below
the light.
RECTILINEAR MOTION
The volume of a cube is increasing at the rate of 6 cm3 /min. How fast is
the surface area increasing when the length of an edge is 12cm.
Sand is poured at the rate of 10 m3 /min so as to form a conical pile
whose altitude is always equal to the radius of its base. Find the rate at
which the area of its base is increasing when the radius is 5cm.
A trough whose cross section is an equilateral triangle is 6m long and
2m wide across the top. If water is entering the trough at 15 m3 /min, at
what rate is thee water level rising in the trough when it is thhree-
fourths full?
