For many centuries humans have been concerned with finding drugs to alleviate their pain.
One of the oldest human activities was the research of plants, animals and also minerals with
therapeutic effect. Naturally, they had to distinguish between toxic and non-toxic plants.

In its original conception, pharmacognosy was in charge of the study of natural products with
potential application in the area of pharmacy, medicine and the treatment of various diseases
that afflicted the human being; which was not detached from the worldview of each people,
their magical and religious beliefs and also the social and cultural context.

But later on, studies of natural products that could have an application not only in the
development of the pharmaceutical industry with repercussions in the medical sciences, but
also in the food, cosmetics, textile and construction industries, among others, were included.
