FIGURES OF SPEECH

1.Personification
Tiger is given qualities of humans. Poet refers him as 'he'.

2. Metaphor
'pads of velvet ' -Here 'pads' are compared with velvet because of the quality of softness of
velvet.

3. Oxymoron
It is a figure of speech which is the combination of words/ideas that are opposite or
contradictory in meaning. Eg. quiet rage
The adjective quiet lends an opposite trait to the nature of rage ( anger). Whenever a person is
in rage, he is not likely to be quiet.

4. Repetition
Repetition of words in the same line-
velvet quiet, quiet rage
brilliant eyes, brilliant stars

5. Alliteration
Repetition of same consonant sounds in the same line. Eg. Use of sound 'p' at the start of two
words 'plump' 'pass', use of sound 'b' in 'behind bars', 'h' sound in 'he hears'

6. Assonance
Repetition of vowel sound 'i'- in his vivid stripes, use of vowel sound 'o' - should around houses

7. Imagery
The poet tries to create an image ( visual) of tiger's activities ( lurking in shadow).
