CAPACITOR TRIP UNIT
INTRODUCTION
‘The capacitor trip unit is a device designed
for use in tripping the operating mechanism of an
oil circuit breaker, its purpose being to provide
sufficient electrical’ energy to operate the current
trip coil of the mechanism. Its function, when a
fault occurs, is to retain an electrical charge, butlt
up during normal operation, for tripping the breaker
even though the line voltage has dropped due to
the fault,
In order to insure reliable performance, the
impact trip mechanism used in conjunction ‘with
the capacitor trip unit must be properly adjusted,
DESCRI
‘The capacitor trip unit consists of a capacitor,
two diode rectifiers, a neon lamp, and a resistor.
‘The capacitor is of the pyranol type, which requires.
a charging time in the capacitor’ trip circuit of
approximately two cycles to accumulate sufficient
energy for tripping the breaker. The function of
For additional information on the {mpact trip mecha
nism, see Instruction Book GET-9840,
Each capacitor trip unit is carefully inspected
and packed by workmen experienced in the proper
handling and packing of electrical equipment. Im-
mediately upon receipt, the device should be ex-
amined for any damage’ sustained during shipment.
Wf injury or rough handling is evident, a damage
claim should be filed at once with the transportation
company, and thenearest General Electric Apparatus
Sales Office should be notified promptly.

the rectifier is explained in the section on OPERA-
TION. The neon lamp is used to indicate a charge
on the capacitor, and is visisble through the device
housing. ‘To complete the circuit a resistor and a
protective device relay, mounted separately in the
control circuit, are also required.
OPERATION
Fig. 1 shows 2 typical connection dlagram for
@ capacitor trip circuit. When the line is in normal
service the protective relay contacts are open and
the capacitors are charged. The charge on the
capacitors is obtained from the potential trans-
former, which steps down the line voltage to 220
volts; a variation between 190 and 230 volts would
be within the normal voltage range of the capacitor.
When a fault occurs, the current transformer
operates the protective’ relay, closing the relay
contact, ‘This completes the circuit from the
charged capacitor to the operating coil of the
trip device, thereby energizing the coil to trip the
Resumption of normal service in the line will
recharge the capacitor in preparation for a sub-
sequent operation.

neon lamp circuit are such as to limit dissipation
of energy from the capacitor to a minimum, to
insure reliable operation. ‘The duration of capacitor
discharge depends, to some extent, upon the value
of the charging voltage. For example, ifthe capaci-
tors were charged by a 200 volt transformer
potential, the transformer secondary couldbe shunted
for 40 seconds and the capacitors would still supply
sufficient energy to trip the breaker within that time,
A. charging voltage of 150 volts could be shunted for
25 seconds and still trip the breaker,
Connection diagram, Fig. 3, shows the capacitor
trip device equipped with a discharge switch. When
the switch is in the charge position, the unit is con-
nected to the control circuit ready for service. When
the switch is in the discharge position, the unit is
disconnected from the line and a short circuit is
placed on the capacitor to discharge it. Connection
diagram, Fig. 2, shows the capacitor trip device with-
futithe discharge switen, CAUTION: Be sure device
is disconnected from the line and discharged before
removing cover and working on device,

RENEWAL PARTS
It is recommended that sufficient renewal parts,
be carried in stock to enable prompt replacement
of worn, broken, or parts. A stock of
such parts minimizes service interruptions caused
by breakdowns, and saves time and expense.
When ordering renewal parts, address the
nearest Apparatus Sales Office of the General
Electric Company giving the data shown on the
capacitor trip unit’ nameplate. Also furnish a
complete description of each part and the quantity
ed. For recommended renewal parts, refer
to ist below.
