1. Comment on the stability of the operating points A, B, C and D.

Ans. B, C

2. A motor operates on a periodic duty cycle in which it is clutched to its speed for 10min
and declutched to run on no load for 20min. Min temp. rise is 40 0 c . Heating and cooling
time constant are equal and have a value of 60min. When load is declutched continuously
the temp. rise is 15 0 c . Determine-
 Max temp. during duty cycle
 Temp. when the load is clutched continuously.
Ans. 49.9 0 c , 104.5 0 c

3. A rolling mill driven by thyristor converter fed dc motor operates on a speed reversing
duty cycle. Motor field is maintained constant at rated value. MI referred to motor shaft is
10k kg-m 2 , duty cycle consists of
(i) Rolling at full speed 200 rpm and at a constant torque of 25k N-m for 10s
(ii) No load operation for 1S at full speed
(iii) Speed reversal from 200 to -200 rpm in 5S
(iv) No load operation for 1S at full speed
(v) Rolling at full speed and a torque of 20k N-m for 15S
(vi) No load operation for 1S at full speed
(vii) Speed reversal from -200 to 200 rpm in 5S
(viii) No load operation for 1S at full speed
Determine torque and power rating of motor.
Ans. 47686N-m, 998.7kW
