Cutting it Extract At the beginning of the scene, we see the two main characters together in a taxi and this

starts with an establishing shot, giving us a clear view of them sitting together with traffic visible behind through the window. We instantly know that the two characters are in a close relationship as the mid shot two-shot highlights her leaning on his shoulder, and he then kisses her hand which signifies the relationship is romantic. There are various medium close up shots throughout their conversation which highlights the seriousness of it and puts emphasis on what they are discussing at that moment. Numerous conversation cuts are used in the taxi as she tries talking to him about future plans and trying to figure out what may have happened in the past. However the male character is very reluctant to talking to her about it and therefore seems more mysterious. Closely after this, we then see an outside view from the taxi which shows an ambulance crossing over the screen with the male asking why they have arrived there, and this can foreshadow future events in the clip, and makes the audience wonder what may be about to happen. An over the shoulder shot is used when the characters have stepped out of the taxi to emphasise the setting behind her and tell the audience where they are going, but still keeping it a mystery as to why. They then use a big close up of the two characters before the woman leaves to enter the hospital, and this links to the conversation they are having, as its very intense and they are discussing their marriage and other positive things to come. This suggests to us that she is entering the hospital to find out results for a medical test. As the female kisses him before she leaves, there is a cut on an action to wider shot as she is crossing the road with the buys traffic and this links to the ending of the scene as we see a similar setup then. This then contrasts with a close up of the male with a serious expression on his face which signifies anxiety and worry that he is feeling. We then see a series of cuts of the two scenes, inside the hospital and out to indicate parallel action. On the inside of the hospital in the consultants room, they use a high angle shot from a birds eye view to emphasise the divide between the patient and the doctor and how they are completely separate and no emotion is shown between the two. This then moves onto a wide shot of the man sitting outside in the caf waiting for her, which contrasts the two different atmospheres in the different locations and how he is nervous waiting for her to return. Back in the consultants office, we see an over the shoulder shot is used which illustrates the consultant closing a folder marked confidential meaning that she is receiving very important information. Then quickly moves onto a mid shot of the woman, and this is the first time we see her reaction to the news, and she is crying, which is not very clear for the audience as it could be a negative or a positive thing. She is also half smiling which could mean positive, however this creates tension for the audience as we cannot hear what the consultant is saying, as diegetic sound is playing. We then see a mid shot of the man waiting outside for her still which implies that he is becoming more nervous as hes waiting a long time for her, until we see her coming from the hospital entrance in a long shot which gives as a clear view of her body language, however it does not give us any indication as to what has happened. The woman has blended into the shot because there is fast moving traffic in front of her, until there is a mid shot of her saying guess what. There is then a cut back to his reaction with a mid-shot to see his reaction. When the camera returns back to her, we see her stepping into the road and then quickly disappearing behind a passing bus. Immediately there is a mid shot back at the man to see his reaction as he jumps up out of the chair and looks at her stunned. After the slow motion section of his first reaction, a hand held camera is then used to

follow him as he crosses the road to signify his panic and how getting to her was a matter of urgency. It then changes to a long shot which illustrates the male running across the road to be by her side. A big close up of both the characters faces is then used and cuts between both of them symbolises that this is a special moment and that the outcome is most likely to be negative. This is also a high angle shot which could relate to biblical reasons, such as god is looking down on her and may be ending her life quickly for a reason. Suggesting that maybe the results she received were not positive. Finally, the scene ends with a crane shot of the man, lying next to his dying wife in the street which signifies their love for each other as he wanted to spend her last minutes alive with her. The speed of the editing varies throughout the clip, starting with slow opening shots of the couple in the taxi. This highlights the loving relationship they have, however the shots do begin to speed up as the conversation becomes more intense. Quick pace cuts are used when talking about past events to signify the intensity and concentration in the conversation and how this is a serious subject. As the taxi pulls up to the hospital, the edits become quicker and more frequent between the two characters which suggests something is about to happen to the woman. As the cuts are between the two characters with close ups, we realise that the audience are looking at their facial expressions and how they are both reacting to the situation. As she enters the consultation room, the cuts become more rapid and urgent, which suggests drags out the scene and makes the audience more intrigued to know the outcome from the situation. Cross cuts back and forth from the woman inside, to the man outside highlights how they are both thinking of each other at the time and brings them closer together as cuts to the rings are shown various times to again symbolise their love for each other. When the woman leaves the hospital, cuts across the road are used to see the anxious and intense atmosphere. Once the woman has been hit by the bus, we see the whole scene has been changed into slow motion shots, which signifies how distraught and lost for words the male is. It also reinforces that for him, seconds seem like minutes and time is passing slowly as he cant believe what has just happened in front of him. As we come to the final dialogue, cuts between the two characters as they are saying their final words represents how every moment they have together is precious and they want to make the most of her last seconds. At the beginning of the scene, there is a naturalistic soundscape which creates a sense of realism and non diegetic sound only is used at this point to emphasise the focus on the couple and the conversation between them both. However as the woman enters the hospital diegetic sounds is used with synthesised music which instantly changes the mood. The use of the violins in the song makes us predict that there is going to be a negative outcome and makes us sympathise towards both characters. The sounds link with the cuts between the two characters as it gives us an insight as to what they may be thinking and feeling at this particular time. It then returns to the soundscape noises and a small piece of dialogue from the woman. This brings the scene back to real life and focuses on the story line. Quickly after this, we hear a loud horn sounding from the bus, which coincides with the woman no longer standing and is now on the floor. This horn suggested danger and warning as she was stepping out onto the road without looking. She may have done this deliberately if she did not receive positive results from the consultant. Instrumental music is then incorporated in the scene at the end when the couple are lying on the floor to give it a melancholy feeling and suggest that she is shortly going to die. The mise-en-scene in the taxi suggests that they can afford to pay someone to drive them away, and adds a sense of mystery to the situation as we do not know

where they are going to. Out the taxi window we see lots of traffic in the streets which suggests they are in the suburbs and a populated town. Both couples are well dressed and look smart which suggests that they take pride in their appearance and are either middle or upper class. We see close ups of them both wearing gold rings, which automatically links with the conversation they are having about a wedding. This implies that they are both married and have therefore made a commitment to each other. Outside the hospital, we see it is surrounded by heavy railings, which suggests that this could be a place of negativity. In the consultants office we see that it is lit from above, and below the room is darker, and this suggests the idea of heaven being above her and providing them with light. This could mean that she is about to hear bad news from the consultant. The darkness of the office and the lightness in the outside shots of the caf show the contrast between the hope and fear the couple have. Finally at the end of the scene when they are both lying on the ground with a crane shot, there are flowers scattered around which suggest she is dead as flowers are often seen at funerals. They are also seen at weddings which then reinforces their love for eachother.
