Marinas Textual Analysis Camera In the establishing shot we are shown that the couple are in a city location

in a black cab we do not know where they have been or where they are going, this creates a sense of mystery. There is now a mid shot of a woman leaning on a mans shoulder indicating a intimate relationship however there is now a dialogue that causes a small argument and the camera is now doing crosscuts to close ups of the characters faces they refuse to look at each other this signifies that there may be tensions in the relationship. Then we see a headshot of the woman and there is a stream of sunlight that is coming from behind her head this looks angelic and suggests that she may be going to heaven. It then cuts to a close-up of their hands and shows a wedding ring showing that despite their struggles they have stayed strong and entwined with each other. We then see a long shot of a busy street and when an ambulance pans across the scene and the camera follows it. This foreshadows that there may be an accident. There are now cut cuts to their faces, there expressions show anxiety and worry, again we see close up shot of the woman with a golden glow on her face while the male has a dark neutral colour again ideology of the idea of heaven and departing. As she does depart we see a over the shoulder shot of the woman leaving. The next section rapidly cuts in and out of parallel action. In the office we see a birds eye pan view, symbolising God watching over, and another suggestion to heaven? We then cut to the man with extreme close up to his ring, showing his love but he then takes it off, suggesting the marriage may end. There then is a high angle shot from the consultant closing a confidential book this creates anxiety and it then track upwards to the womans face, with tears we are unsure of her emotions creating tension among the audience as we do not know if she is well or not. There then is a point of view shot from the man as he sees her coming out of the gates, but then his vision is obscured by traffic. She pauses in medium shot and shouts Guess what and it cuts to his reaction and back to her as she steps into the road but when again the camera is blocked by traffic. Then is jump cuts to his face stunned and unsure what had happened. There is a slow motion point of view shot of him watching the cars move and watched her spread across the floor. This creates suspense. He runs over to her and the camera is mid shot behind him and is hand held shaking creating a sense of the audience being involved. He leans down to her and there is a quick cut back to a zoom into her face from his point of view. A close-up high angle shot is shown framed by his hand emphasises their love and devastation. As she dies there is a low angle close-up of his face and shows his agonised face and a slow zoom from a high angle shot of him embracing her. This again signifies that god is watching and it was intended to happen. Editing in the clip varies though the scene. The slow opening to establish the relationship and love between the two and then goes into quick cuts and reverse shots to emphasise the importance forgiveness. As the cab gets to the hospital the audience is positioned as a partial observer and it seems that the woman gets more screen time and it signifies that she is the most important character in the scene. The style and pace now picks up when she is at the consultant room, this is to draw emphasis and create tension and enigma among the audience as they are anxious to see if she is well or not. There is a lot of contrast between light and dark in the crosscuts, this signifies that there is a separation in the couple and foreshadows her apparent death. There is rapid cross cuts on the final sequence build the emotional impact, there is a slow

motion section where he runs towards her and the audience are positioned so they are running behind to be apart of the action. The slow motion also allows the audience to take in what had happened and feel sympathy. Naturalistic sounds are used in the beginning sequence to create realism and make the audience more aware of the surroundings. There are digetic noise of crowds and traffic. When the couple converstate there is no digetic sound this emphasises the importance of their conversation and signifies the audience to listen and is an important part of the sequence. As the woman enters the hospitals there is low strains of music, and rhythmic percussion, the low tone and pitch suggests there is tension between the relationship and outcome. This also could represent the feelings of the woman of being sad, nervous and pessimistic. As the music fades the woman is emerging from the hospital the music fades out to more digetic street sounds. This signifies there potentially could be good news. However this contrasts when the woman is hit by a car. The music is then introduced and the music is much faster pace and creates tension. As he reaches her the music is slow and sorrowful representing her death and his sorrow. The black taxi suggests that the couple can afford the taxi and the way they are dressed suggest that they are middle/upper-class people. They seem to have a sense of purpose and they are going somewhere important. The traffic outside represents the urban city and sets the atmosphere as busy and hectic, and could be a signifier of the events yet to happen. The rings suggests that they are happily married and that the ring is sparkly and classy which signifies to the audience they are well off and are in love as they keep holding each others hand and staring at the ring showing commitment and strength. The weather as they get out is not sunny but seems to have a cloud over the location, this contrasts with the flowers on the stall opposite this could suggest that although they are happy and optimistic there are still bad things could happen. Also as she enters the hospital the woman does not tie up her knot but as she comes out she ties her coat which signifies the term tying the knot and ready to be fully committed. There is contrast between the lighting in the office and outside, the bright natural lights to a dark eerier tone showing the balance between fear and hope. As she gets hit and dies the scattering of flowers around her body reinforces the pathos of a closing shot.
