teaches us that you don't have to be a specialist in one field: a true renaissance man like Leonardo

more impromptu moments that come with being a public figure under intense. scrutiny. Some have

from its apex of immense popularity shortly after its antitrust trials is perhaps no coincidence.
However, in any event, Gates' up. and down experience with image perception highlights just how

"If I'd had some set idea of a finish line, don't you think I would have crossed it years ago?"

Bill Gates.

One of the common misconceptions of being successful in the business world. or simply enjoying a
decent amount of success through any venture - is the role of good fortune. Many people seem to
place an excessive amount of emphasis. in the belief that others have succeeded where they haven't,
because others have had more than their fair share of luck. This is, in fact, a toxic attitude that
breeds. complacency and encourages laziness. The story of Bill Gates is one that is often touted as a
'right place, right time' Success story- the kind where the stars aligned and the universe was in
perfect harmony, and just so happened to generate the kind of luck that made Gates a very wealthy
man. While there was indeed an element of this in Gates' success, it was also his dedication, hunger
and focus that made his success possible, and is one of the reasons why he and his company profited
immensely from the personal computing boom rother than a rival company. Though he came from a
well off, upper- middle class family, this was of no importance to Gates when it came to his
motivation.

Just six weeks after Musk filed for divorce, be announced his engagement to British actress Talulah
Riley. Though the relationship between his ex-wife and new Financer could have been actimonious,
Justine took the unusual step of reaching out to her replacement (who she was never met) in an
email.

I would rather live out the French-movie version of things in which the two women become friends
and various philosophies are pondered, than the American version, in which one is "good" and one is
"bad" and there's a huge catfight sequence and someone gets known off a balcony".

Riley responded, "Let's do as the French do".

47. In every walk of life, civility makes things easier for everyone involved.

I remember him saying, " Being with me was choosing the hard path.' I didn't quite understand at the
time, but I do now, It's quite hard, quite the crazy ride - Talulah Riley.

A graduate of Cheltenham Ladies college, Riley probably first caught Musk's eye when she appeared
as Mary Bennet in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice. She also had roles In St. Trinian's, The Boat
that Rocked, and Dr. Who. The couple married in Dornoch cathedral in 2010, and their marriage
lasted two years The Telegraph reported that Riley received a $4.2 million divorce settlement, but the
couple were oddly reconciled, albeit temporarily, in 2014. The current status of their relationship is
open to debate: legally Musk and Riley. are still married, but the Associated Press annouced another
split on 31 December 2014, this time with an alimony payout of $16 million in cash and assets.

Smashing even Musk's expectations. Once it is operational, Musk's planned "Gigafactory" in Nevada
will enable Tesla to more than double the world's total annual production of Lithium-ion batteries.
He is taking on the energy market in a spectacular manner.

29 Think outside the box for uklys you can enter new markets.

Musk's interest in energy is not just in storage and use, but also in production. SolarCity, one of the
USA's largest solar power companies, designs, finances, and installs solar power systems. Although it
was founded in 2006 by Lyndon and Peter Rive, the idea for the company came from their cousin,
Elon Musk, who is SolarCity's Chairman and provided. its start-up capital.

SolarCity Works in a number of complementary areas. It has a number of commercial solar

installations in California, including on sites belonging to eBay, British. Motors, Walmart and Intel; it
offers energy efficiency. evaluations and upgrades to home owners; there is a five -year plan to build
more than $1 billion in solar photovoltaic projects (predominantly rooftop solar panels) for military
housing estates in the US, it produced electric car charging points; and also installs snap together.
solar panels. SolarCity plans to build a major new manufacturing facility in Buffalo, New York in order
to manufacture high-effciency solar modules. When it is completed, this will be the largest such plant
in the US and will enable SolarCity to compete aggressively against manufacturers in China.

30 No market or business exists in isolation. Supporting Solar City - which now has a market
capitalisation in excess of $6 billion - is a good move for Musk as it sits well with his investment in
Tesla. Not only cam SolarCity produce the quality car chargers Tesla needs, but the household
batteries produced by Tesla can also be used to store electricity produced by homes with SolarCity's
photovoltaic cells. It is a win-win situation.

Musk's venture into public transportation, Hyper loop,

Steve Jobs and Apple, would later emulate as a core part of their own companies' marketing
strategies.

Despite his readiness to embrace and exploit the great marketing machine, Gates has also been on
the negative end of public perception, and in a very personal way. indeed. Over time Gates came to
be viewed as the face of Corporate greed and establishment wealth, which as a figure who was
named the work's richest man 12 years in a row, was a hard image to avoid. To make matters worse,
there were several instances of public interaction where Gates was not portrayed as the most
humble of characters. When he was called to testify as part of the United States us. Microsoft
Corporation antitrust lawsuit, he was perceived as being. very uncooperative during the entire
process. Gates gave tense answers to most questions, and displayed a lack of humility and a high
degree of petulance, combativeness, and entitlement in his behavior. This was also repeated when
Microsoft was ruled by the European Commission to have. violated competitiveness standards, and
was ordered to pay. the single biggest fine in the history of the commission (and equivalent of $ 794
million) as a result. This episode of Gates' life yielded a valuable lesson sometimes good branding.
involves not only active engagement through deliberate -marketing campaigns, but also through the
management of the public image during unforeseen events. Though Gates and Microsoft were
certainly entitled to object to the anticompetiveness accusations that they were charged with, the
manner in which this was done was arguably harmful to both the image of Gates and his company.
Gates, however, did appear to learn from this experience, and took great efforts to appear as a more
relatable 'every man' following this episode.

1 In an era of unprecedented levels of branding and public relations, we can all learn a valuable
lesson from Gates' experiences. Though he has displayed a clear passion and vision for marketing his
company's products, he has not been infallible in this ared. Furthermore, while his efforts to directly
