Text B

Text B is a comment section of an online news article about the government's actions
regarding the problem of homelessness. Therefore, we can see three different commenters,
each expressing their subjective opinion and doing it in not more than a couple of sentences,
which is typical for a comment section, where people try to express themselves as shortly as
possible.

The first commenter, Portnoy58, states that it is important to help homeless people, but the
government benefits from doing the opposite: “Surely this shambles is what the government
actually wants”, they say. As well as their opinion on the matter they also provide possible
solutions to the problem of homeless people and what the government must do to help them.
Portnoy58 uses more advanced vocabulary compared to other commenters, for example
phrases like “subject to the caprices of their landlords” or “offers a degree of security and
settlement”, correct grammar and punctuation. Their language is targeted towards a mature
and educated audience.

The second commenter, toom, is having an argument with the third commenter - skipsdad.
Toom is trying to persuade skipsdad to accept their point of view. They think that we should
not be obliged to provide housing to each homeless individual, as it is impossible to provide
enough. They also use the phrase “EVERY EU citizen that rolls up here and needs housed”,
which is very interesting in many ways. Firstly it shows us that the commenter has a rather
negative opinion on homeless people in the UK and a very definite one on where they come
from: they assume that most of the homeless people in the UK immigrate from other EU
countries. Furthermore, we can see that the commenter doesn’t pay much attention to their
grammar. If we look at the rest of the comment we can see that they use personal pronouns
like “you” a lot and address directly to another commenter in an informal manner, and also
use internet slang like adding “le” in “le logic”.

There isn’t much to be said about the last commenter, skipsdad, as we can only see one of
their comments, which is a short reply to toom, where skipsdad tries to contradict their point.
They use proper grammar and spelling, unlike toom, they put a full stop in the end of their
sentence. It might be to appear smarter than their opponent.
