Arithmetic Sequence/Common Difference

- A sequence whose consecutive terms have a common difference is an arithmetic

sequence
- The number sequence in which each successive term may be formed by adding the
same number

The numbers in the sequence are the terms of the sequence

Arithmetic Means
- Arithmetic mean or average is the sum of a collection of numbers divided by the
number of numbers in the collection
- The terms between two nonconsecutive terms in an arithmetic sequence are known
as Arithmetic means

Arithmetic Series
- Arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence

D is the common difference in the arithmetic sequence

Formula for Arithmetic Sequence

an = a₁ + (n - 1)d

m₁ = a₁ + d
= a₁ + d
=

Formula for Arithmetic Series

n
Sn = (a₁ + an)
2

Geometric Sequence

- A sequence in which each term is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a

fixed number is called a geometric sequence or a geometric progression

R is the common ratio in the geometric sequence

A finite geometric sequence is a sequence of numbers having a finite number of terms

An Infinite geometric sequence is a sequence of numbers that has an infinite number of

terms

Geometric Means
- is/are the missing term(s) between two nonconsecutive terms in a geometric
sequence
Geometric Series
- The sum of a geometric sequence is called a geometric series

1. The Sum of the First n Terms of a Finite Geometric Sequence

a₁(1 - rⁿ)
Sn =
1-r
2. Sum of Infinite Geometric Sequence
a₁
S∞ =
1-r

Fibonacci Sequence

1 1 2 3 5 8 13
Is called the Fibonacci Sequence. The first two terms of this sequence are 1 and each
successive term is the sum of the preceding pair of terms

1+1=2
1+2=3
2+3=5
3+5=8
5 + 8 = 13 …

A Fibonacci-type sequence is a sequence in which the general term is given by the formula

Fn = Fⁿ−₁ + Fⁿ−₂ , n ≻ 2

Harmonic Sequence

The sequence of the reciprocals of these terms

1 1 1 , …, 1
a₁ a ₂ a ₃ aⁿ
