(Viscous flow in pipes)

1- In the figure below the pipe entrance is sharp-edged. If the flow

rate is 0.004 m3/s, what power, in W, is extracted by the turbine?
(For cast iron, ε ≈ 0.26 mm). The minor loss coefficients are:
(Entrance: K ≈ 0.5; open globe valve: K ≈ 6.9)

2- The pump shown in figure below adds 25 kW to the water and

causes a flowrate of 0.04m3/s. Determine the flowrate expected
if the pump is removed from the system. Assume 𝑓 = 0.016 for
either cases and neglect minor losses.

3- The system in figure below consists of 1200 m of 5 cm cast-iron

pipe, two 45° and four 90° flanged long-radius elbows, a fully
open flanged globe valve, and a sharp exit into a reservoir. If the
elevation at point 1 is 400 m, what gage pressure is required at
point 1 to deliver 0.005 m3/s of water at 20°C into the reservoir?
(kelbow,45=0.2, kelbow,90=0.3, kglobe =8.5)
4- With the valve closed, water flows from tank A to tank B as
shown in figure below. What is the flowrate into tank B when
the valve is opened to allow water to flow into tank C also?
Neglect all minor losses and assume that the friction factor is
0.02 for all pipes.
