A: Hi Lucy, how are you?
L: Not great, actually, Alex. We were burgled the other night and it’s really
upset me!
A: Oh, that’s horrible! Were you in the house at the time?
L: We were upstairs, asleep! They broke in through the back door. We think
they were probably professionals because they got into the house very
easily and they didn’t even break the glass.
A: Did you hear them?
L: No, luckily! They just walked around downstairs and took everything
they could find – James’s watch and laptop, my phone and the car keys.
Then they stole our car!
A: Oh, what a nightmare! Do you know what? I think there’s more crime
happening recently. My neighbor, Karen, was mugged last week at
three o’clock in the afternoon! Can you believe it? The robber stole her
handbag and pulled off her necklace.
L: No!
A: Yes, and it had been her wedding present from her husband.
L: Were there any witnesses?
A: Yes, someone driving by saw what was happening and called the police.
They managed to catch him. But sadly, they didn’t find the necklace.
L: What a shame! Do you think he’ll go to prison?
A: I don’t know. He has to go to court next week. It probably depends on
whether or not it’s his first crime. But it’s such a horrible thing to do.
L: Is Karen old?
A: Not really. And she’s in very good shape, but it all happened so fast,
there was nothing she could do about it. She’s been very brave about it,
but that kind of thing really makes you lose your confidence.
L: I know. I feel like I can’t relax in my own home now. I think I’d feel
better if the police had caught our burglars but, as I said, they were
professionals. They were careful not to leave anything in the house that
would help the police find them.
A: Well, I really hope they catch them.
L: So do I!

S: Tom, you’re a very positive person! Do you believe that in general
people are better, you know, morally better – kinder and nicer – than
they used to be?
T: Yes, I do. I think the world is probably a better place than it was, say, ten
years ago.
S: Well, according to a recent opinion poll, most people would disagree
with you! Apparently, seventy percent of people think we are getting
worse as a society – and just five percent believe we’re getting better.
Anyway, earlier today we spoke to Michael, someone who firmly
believes that we’re all getting worse. I asked Michael why he thinks that
people are less honest these days …
M: Well, of course we’re not all bad! There are some very nice people out
there – my family and friends, for example, have very high standards of
behavior. However, the recent increase in the number of crimes shows
that, as a society, we are worse than we used to be. Every time I turn on
my radio, I hear about all these crimes that are being committed; for
example, all the clever techniques that thieves are using to steal money
from innocent victims on the Internet.
S: You mean online theft?
M: Yes, exactly. It’s a huge problem nowadays.
T: Well, that’s very true, Michael. On the other hand, I heard on the TV
news yesterday that violent crime is decreasing.
S: Yeah! There are definitely fewer murders than there used to be.
M: Well, yes, the most serious kind of crimes, such as murder, are
decreasing, but when you say, “violent crime,” I think there’s some
confusion about what this is. You know, mugging is a violent crime –
people are often hurt when they’re mugged – and it seems to me more
and more people are being mugged.
S: Is that true, Michael? Do you have any evidence to support that?
M: Well … our local newspaper usually reports two or three muggings in my
town every week. And a reporter on our local radio station said that the
number of burglaries in our part of the country had gone up by twenty
percent since last year. Breaking into a person’s home is a terrible thing
to do and, according to the official statistics, there are more burglaries
nowadays. …
S: Well, as you’ve just heard, Michael doesn’t agree with Tom on this one.
He is absolutely convinced that the world is a worse place than it used
to be!
