Roleplay 3 - School Interpreting

Contexto: una madre española acude a una reunión sobre su

hijo con el director de su colegio estadounidense

Principal Marshall: Good morning, Mrs. López. Please take a seat.

Sra. López: Buenos días. Mi hijo me ha dado un papel donde usted me pedía venir

a su despacho.

Principal Marshall: Yes, I wanted to see you to talk about your son’s behavior.

Sra. López: ¿Y eso? ¿Está todo bien?

Principal Marshall: Well, his behavior has worsened and I sense something

happens to him.

Sra. López: ¿A qué se refiere?

Principal Marshall: He is very intelligent, but the teaching staff has seen him make

mischievous comments and being very disrespectful.

Sra. López: No es posible, en casa sigue siendo el de siempre. No lo entiendo.

Principal Marshall: That’s why I wanted to talk to you, he still manages to get very

good grades, but he won’t say what happens to him because he is very shy.

Sra. López: Su hermana se ha marchado de casa a estudiar en el extranjero, puede

que eso le haya afectado, pero en casa no lo noto distinto.

Principal Marshall: It is very likely that’s the reason behind this. I’m sure he insults

others and acts differently because he feels angry or sad.

Sra. López: No tenía ni idea, en casa sigue igual, y nunca me ha dicho nada.

Principal Marshall: It's not uncommon for students to hide their feelings, especially

if there have been significant changes in their lives. The Director of Studies and the

teaching stuff want to ensure he receives the support he needs.

Sra. López: Sí, claro. Hablaré con él y si sucede algo en casa se lo comunicaré.

¿Hay alguna manera en la que ustedes también puedan hacer algo?

Principal Marshall: Absolutely, Mrs. López. We have counseling services available

for students. I’ll make sure he meets with our school counselor so your son has a

safe space to express himself.

Sra. López: Gracias, eso me tranquiliza un poco. Pero, ¿cree que esto afectará

mucho a sus estudios este año?

Principal Marshall: With your support at home and the resources we provide at

school, I believe he will be able to take the annual placement test. Your son is very

intelligent.

Sra. López: De acuerdo. Haré lo posible para hablar con él y hablaré con la

consejera del colegio. Gracias por avisarme de la situación.

Principal Marshall: You are welcome, Mrs. López. I will see you soon. Goodbye.

Sra. López: Perfecto, muchas gracias.
