Front, between close and half-close.


Long but subject to quantity variations.
The lips are slightly spread.

Retracted, half-close. Generally short.


The lips are slightly spread.
(bit, pin, fish)

Vowel n° 3: / e /
Front. Mid. Usually short.
The lips are slightly spread.
(bet, men, yes)

Front, between half-open and open.
Normally short, but long in lab, bad,
man, etc.
The lips are slightly spread.

Back, open, unrounded (lip position is


neutral). Although relatively long,
it undergoes variations of length.

Back, open. Normally short.


The lips are slightly rounded.

Vowel n° 7: / ɔː /

Back, mid. Usually long but


subject to quantity variations.
The lips are strongly rounded.
(board, torn, horse)

Vowel n° 8: / ʊ /

Advanced, half-close. Generally short.


Slight lip-rounding.
(put, pull, push)

Central, between half-open and open.


Normally short.
The lip position is neutral.
(cut, rush, tough)

Vowel n° 11: / ɜː /

Mid, central. Generally long but subject


to length variations.
Lips unrounded (neutral).
(bird, curl, purse)

Vowel n° 12: / ə /

Mid, central. Lips unrounded.


More open in final, open syllables.
(camera, doctor, about)
