ASME Code Stamps and Definitions

Watlow® designs and manufactures products with the highest levels of quality and complies with requirements specific
to form and function in many of the Energy and Environmental Technologies’ applications we serve. The list below
summarizes all ASME code stamps and certifications to which we are currently compliant.

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Code Stamps:

“S” Stamp - BPVC Section I Certification (Power Boilers):

• Applicable to boilers in which steam or other vapor is generated at pressures exceeding 15 psig, and high
temperature water boilers intended for operation at pressures exceeding 160 psig and/or temperatures
exceeding 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Superheaters, economizers and other pressure parts connected directly
to the boiler without intervening valves are considered as part of the scope of Section I.
“NPT” Stamp - BPVC Section III (Nuclear Facility Components):
• Allows holders to certify and stamp new parts, appurtenances, tubular products and piping sub-
assemblies used at nuclear facilities.
“H” Stamp- BPVC Section IV (Heating Boilers):
• Applicable to boilers in which steam or other vapor is generated at pressures not exceeding 15 psig,
and high temperature water boilers intended for operation at pressures not exceeding 160 psig and/or
temperatures not exceeding 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Applies to steam heating boilers, hot water heating
boilers, hot water supply boilers and to appurtenances thereto.
“U” Stamp- BPVC Section VIII (Pressure Vessels) Division I:
• Provides requirements applicable to the design, fabrication, inspection, testing and certification of pressure
vessels operating at either internal or external pressures exceeding 15 psig. Such pressure vessels may
be fired or unfired. Specific requirements apply to several classes of material used in pressure vessel
construction, and also to fabrication methods such as welding, forging and brazing. It contains mandatory
and non-mandatory appendices detailing supplementary design criteria, nondestructive examination and
inspection acceptance standards.
NBIC Stamp
• For the repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels and other pressure-retaining items that are code
stamped.
In conjunction with the above certifications, Watow is also compliant to BPVC Section II Materials,
BPVC Section V (Non-Destruction Examination) and BPVC Section IX (Welding, Brazing and Fusing).
