two scanning centers at Hyderabad under UDL Project

– They are at
1. State Central Library, Afzalgunj, Hyderabad
2. City Central Library, Ashoknagar, Hyderabad

• State Central Library was established during 1891 by name ‘Asifia Library’
by Nizams.
• It has a rich collection of books in different languages viz. Telugu, English,
Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Persian, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi & Sanskrit

SELECTION OF BOOKS

O Books not attracted Copy Right Act., are being identified by the team constituted
for this purpose from the old and ancient private libraries and Government
Libraries.

DATA VERIFICATION

O Search is made to know whether a particular book got already scanned or not
O After completion of meta data files, the books will be sent to scanning room

SCANNING PROCEDURE

O After scanning,, scanned data will be stored in OTIFF folder in TIFF format
O After completing cropping work, OCR will be applied by using ABBEY FINE
READER and coverted into HTML files.

O After completing quality control check, Hard Disks containing HTML files will
be
sent to IISC, Bangalore to keep the material on WEB.

 A. REGISTRAR OF PUBLICATIONS

• Registrar of Publications is functioning since 1956 under Press &

Registration Act.1867. As per this Act all the books published in Andhra
Pradesh are being received from 1956 onwards

• Total books registered with Registrar of Publications are 33,413

 STRATEGY ADOPTED FOR OBTAINING WILLINGNESS OF
AUTHORS/PUBLISHERS
 Consent of Authors/Publishers to obtain their willingness through press
& media and also in writing to scan their books
 Out of 35,733 books available, Authors/publishers covering 26,772 booka
are addressed requesting them to give /consent to scan their books and to
keep them on WEB

RESULT

 1,016 Authors/publishers gave their consent to scan 6,841 Books

 A separate team of employees of Registrar of Publications constituted for
obtaining consent of authors/publishers.

STRATEGY ADOPTED TO OBTAIN BOOKS FROM OTHER LIBRARIES

 A team has been constituted with Librarians of SCL & CCL as Liaison
Officers for identification of old books available at Sri Krishna Devaraya
Andhra Bhasha Nilayam & Vemana Grandhalayam, Hyd. and other
Government/Private Libraries.

 AT SCANNING CENTER

• Number of scanners installed are five at each center

• Scanning Centres are functioning in two shifts i.e., 6.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.
& 2.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. from 10th December, 2002.

• Scanning work was out-sourced to private agencies on contract basis

• Two Librarians are allotted to each shift in each scanning center.

• Librarians identify books and do the pre scanning work, create meta data
files and ensures quality check after scanning.

• A senior Librarian is appointed as in-charge of the Scanning Centre to

oversee the entire work

 SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING EFFICIENCY OF THE
SCANNING CENTERS

J Early installation of Terabyte Server is required which helps to

complete the entire process right from scanning to keep

the book on web.

J Vendors are paid scanning charges in full without completing all

works as per tender agreement since OCRs in Telugu and

other Indian languages are not yet made available
