Solve the following sums in your notebook:

A) Write the opposites of the following

statements:

a) Profit of Rs. 500

b) 50m below sea level
c) 25km east
d) Increase in temperature
Solve the following sums in your notebook:

B) Write the integers represented by A, B, C, D

and E in the given number line.

C) Arrange in ascending order:

-105, 73, -50, -67, 45

D) Arrange in descending order:

-1008, -8001, -506, -605
Solve the following sums in your notebook:

E) Evaluate:

a) -392 + (-5) + (-8) + (-15)

b) -137 + 354 – 203 + 506

Solve the following sum in your notebook:
Ex.1.1(Q8) A submarine is positioned 1300m below sea
level. If it ascends 450m, what will be its new position?

Position: 1300m below sea level = (-1300m)

Ascends: 450m = +450m
New Position = ?

Soln.) New Position = (-1300 + 450) = (-850)

Ans.) New Position of the submarine = (-850m)

OR
Submarine is positioned at 850m below sea
level.
Solve the following sum in your notebook:
Ex.1.1(Q15) The sum of two integers if -450. If one integer
is -327, find the other integer.

Sum = (-450) Eg. Sum = 5

One integer = 3
One integer = (-327) Other integer = ?
Other integer = 2
Other integer = ? (5 – 3)
i.e. sum – given integer

Soln.) Other integer = Sum – One integer

= (-450) – (-327)
= (-450 + 327)
= (-123)

Ans.) Other integer = (-123)

Solve the following sum in your notebook:
(Exercise 1.1 page2)

Q10) In Srinagar, the temperature was 2°C in the

afternoon on a particular day. What was the
temperature during the night if it further dropped by
5°C?
Q11) A submarine is positioned 1050m below the sea
level. If it descends 300m, what will be its new
position?
Q12) Mercury is a metal, which is liquid at room
temperature. Its melting point is -39°C. The freezing
point of alcohol is -114°C. How much warmer is the
meting point of mercury than the freezing point of
alcohol?
Consider the following:

1. 4+4+4+4+4
2. 16 + 16 + 16
3. (-3) + (-3) + (-3) + (-3)
4. (-5) + (-5) + (-5) + (-5) + (-5)

Previous Knowledge:
Multiplication is repeated addition
The above examples can be simplified as:
1. 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 5 x 4 = 20
2. 16 + 16 + 16 = 3 x 16 = 48
3. (-3) + (-3) + (-3) + (-3) = 4 x -3 = -12
4. (-5) + (-5) + (-5) + (-5) + (-5) = 5 x -5 = -25
