A reaction paper about a movie entitled Gone with the wind by Margaret Mitchell

The movie Gone with the wind by Margaret Mitchell takes place in Georgia, mostly in
Atlanta, during the Civil war on 1860s . However, important sections also takes place
in Tara, tha plantation home of O’Hara’s family. The plantation is o na e of the
several spanned Southern Georgia and is fictionally, one of those that survived the
destruction of the General Sherman’s march.

The story begins at Tara before the civil war. The atmosphere before the chaos was
still light. The tie period during which the “old South” is full of elegance, wealth and
aristocratic traditions. Atlanta was is the first burned and then rebuild by Yankees
who prosper while southerners who cling desperately the old traditions subsist in the
proud poverty.

The story revolves around Scarlet O’Hara. She is the daughter of Gerald and Ellen
O’Hara. She is a self – centered protagonist with a determined beauty which
surrounds herself with men and is accustomed to step anyone who gets in her way.
She is willful, conniving, her cleverness makes her far more intelligent than well-
bred girls are supposed to be. She is obsessed with Ashley Wilkes, a passive
blonde, handsome southern gentleman protagonist and husband of Melanie
Hamilton. Melanie Hamilton portrays a kind woman unable to turn away anyone who
needs her hand and a loving wife of Ashley Wilkes. She can be also describe as a
local community madam, a well- like by a swath of society that ranges from the
community leader wanting to find the best for everyone. She is also a sister of
Charles Hamilton. Charles Hamilton is the first husband Of Scarlet O’Hara who died
in measles. Another associates in the story is Brett Butler, a bold cynical rule –
breaker and confederate rogue.
The movie focus on the historical context of the American Civil War, abolitionist
philosophy, and the cultural divide between the North and South, narrative mode,
and ideological value. Scarlett is unlike any other aristocratic woman because she is
bright, coquettish, headstrong, and diligent. She is unique and also cursed. However,
in the old world, she is judged as a new lady. She is also a woman of ambivalence
with diverse characteristics in different life stages and social backgrounds,
revealing the indomitable spirit of women in the face of difficulties and their intimate
relationship with the environment. On the other hand, she is rebellious and
capricious, greedy and vain; however despite of those flaws she is strong,
determined and persistent in love. This character has manifested the American
bourgeoisie which is a kind of indomitable spirit, a spirit of daring to be a pioneer that
is enterprising as an American. She is a heroine who is good at building her new life
on the ruins of the old world! This is the manifestation of Scarlett’s feminist thought.
