EDUCATION LEVEL IN INDONESIA

Level of education is the highest level of formal education that an individual has
received or the highest degree they have earned. Educational levels are defined by the
developmental differences of students and how the learning environments are structured.
Naturally then, environments look like, how they function, and what should be done to promote
and build them varies by education level.
In terms of education level, Indonesia is in the low category, namely ranked 54th out
of 78 countries included in the World Population Review list in 2023. This ranking rose one
level compared to 2020, where Indonesia was ranked 55th. If you look at the rankings of other
Southeast Asian regions, Indonesia is beaten by Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. This is
caused by the low number of Indonesians who receive higher education and the high school
dropout rate.
According to records from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration
(Dukcapil), among Indonesia's 275.36 million population, only 6 percent have received higher
education. The reason is, education is an important element that can break the chain of poverty
in Indonesia through the creation of quality human resources. However, in reality, data released
by Katadata as of June 2022 shows that there are still 23.61 percent, equivalent to 65 million
people, who have not or are not in school. The gap is clearly visible from the percentage of the
population who have completed high school/high school/equivalent, which is 20.89 percent or
57 million. Meanwhile, the proportion of participation in D1 and D2 is only 0.41 percent,
equivalent to 1 million population. In fact, there are still many people who have not finished
elementary school, amounting to 11.14 percent, equivalent to 30 million people. Elementary
school graduates were 23.4 percent or 64 million people.
Indonesia's low level of education also cannot be separated from the gap in access to
education between rural and urban communities. Economic status also goes hand in hand with
the population's graduate level. The higher the economic status, the higher a person's education.
For this reason, education in Indonesia must be improved, both in terms of the quality of
teaching staff, the system being promoted, and the educational institutions themselves. This
can be done by holding a comprehensive training and professional development program for
teachers. Apart from that, the government can implement innovative education models,
strengthen cooperation networks between educational institutions, and strengthen the duties
and responsibilities of BAN-PT in evaluating educational institutions in Indonesia. BAN-PT
itself is an institution that has an important role in ensuring the quality and standards of
education in Indonesia. It doesn't stop there, as the Human Right to education echoed by
UNESCO, education should be accessible and not limited by age, place or time.
