Rainforest

Description of Biome:

Rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems. These

incredible places cover only 6 %of the Earth's surface but
yet they contain MORE THAN 1/2 of the world's plant
and animal species! A Rainforest can be described as a
tall, dense jungle. The reason it is called a "rain" forest is
because of the high amount of rainfall it gets per year.
The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the
animals and plants that exist there must learn to adapt to
this climate.

. Locations around the World:

Tropical rainforests are located near the equator. Fifty seven percent of all
tropical rainforests are found in Latin America. One third of the world's
tropical rainforests are in Brazil. Other tropical rainforests are located in
Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands (25% of the world's tropical rainforests)
and West Africa (18%).

Temperate rainforests are found along some coasts in temperate zones. The
largest temperate rainforests are found on the Pacific coast of North America.
They stretch from Oregon to Alaska for 1,200 miles. Smaller temperate
rainforests can be found on the southeast coast of Chile in South America.
There are a few other coastal strips with temperate rainforests, including small
areas in the United Kingdom, Norway, Japan, New Zealand, and southern
Australia.

climate group. The temperature in a rain forest rarely gets nutrients. Many of these soils are Oxisols and

of soils have weathered for thousands of years to
create the characteristic red and yellow soils of
Africa, Australia, South America, and Southeast Asia.
Both types of these soils are low in organic matter.
Describe the topography of your Biome:
The topography of rainforests varies considerably, from flat lowland plains marked by small rock hills to highland valleys criss-crossed by
streams. Volcanoes that produce rich soils are fairly common in the humid tropical forests.
1. Characterized by
a. Tropical rainforests are covered in lush, green trees and plant life that
vary in height, from extremely tall ones to little ones.

2. Famous for
a. Famous mountains, lakes, and rivers found in Tropical rainforests:
Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (tallest mountain in Africa!)
Mount Kinabalu and Mount Tahan in Malaysia
Amazon River
Congo River
Mekong River
Madeira River
Angel Falls in Venezuela
The Meeting of the Waters in Brazil

3. The affects from the features

a. The mountains could help control the amount of rainfall that tropical
rainforests receive through a concept referred to as "Rain Shadow". This occurs
when rain falls on the windward side of the mountains; the land on the other side of the mountain gets far less rain and that allows more
