WHAT IS SELF-REFLECTION JOURNAL?
A self-reflection journal also known as a personal reflection, is used to monitor the
growth of specialised learning for students, and they may utilise this self-reflection notebook
to evaluate their performance in learning something new. In this journal, show the journey of
myself in the learning process for Fundamentals of Management in the first semester of 2023.
Through this journal, I can observe all of my development as I study in this subject and
improve my performance utilising the ideas from this subject so that I can conduct the
evaluation with accuracy. MGT 162 is a topic that teaches students how to manage
themselves in a variety of situations, whether in an organisation or on their own. This topic
may provide me with a wealth of information, particularly regarding planning, organising,
leading, and controlling operations in a given setting, while also requiring me to solve any
problems, challenges, or conflicts that may arise.

INTRODUCTION
As-Salamualaikum, w.b.t. My name is WAN NAJIBAH BINTI MOHAMED, I am 19 years
old this year and I have a Diploma in BANKING. I am presently enrolled in my first semester
at the University Technology Mara (UITM) branch in KELANTAN. I belong to the BA119A
class. I was born and reared in the quiet village of Kg. PENGKALAN NANGKA with my
nine siblings. My family is made up of three brothers and five sisters. My elder brother is 42
years old. My father died when I was 13 but thank God, my mother is still living. My mum is
a homemaker who is 69 years old. I am originally from Kelantan Darul Naim.
I have excellent critical thinking abilities. When there is an issue, I can come up with
the best solution. I can handle the problem without the assistance of any other party. In
addition, I am a person who makes long-term plans. It is simpler for me to fulfil my
objectives if I plan ahead of time. With a strategy, we can achieve our goals. If there are no
obstacles, the plan can be implemented effectively. So, I'm now attempting to adjust to
academic life. This project is a reflection on my learning experiences in Communication
(Chapter 8), Quality (Chapter 9) and Islamic Management (Chapter 10) for the course
Fundamentals of Management (MGT 162). I've written summaries for each chapter that
highlight the obstacles I had to face while studying each one and how I overcame them. My
semester goal must be to get the highest possible grade in all classes. By receiving strong
grades can assist feed my motivation to continue working hard to finish my education by
receiving exceptional grades and the dean's list award every semester.

1
MY STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS
For the first time, I realised that managing was not as simple as I had imagined when I
was in high school. Although I have a rudimentary understanding from what I was taught in
high school, it is still challenging for me because the language utilised is English, and I am
not proficient in English. This course is broken into 10 chapters. From chapters 1 to 5, I learnt
about management basics such as planning, decision making, organising, and motivating.
This chapter is easier to understand than chapters 6 through 10, which cover leadership,
control, communication, quality, and management from an Islamic perspective. I have to do a
lot of revision when learning the fundamentals of management since there are many theories
in this subject that I need to remember, and sometimes I have to view learning videos by the
lecturer repeatedly so that I can better comprehend each topic given. For me, it was
challenging at first since I couldn't organise my time properly for all of the classes I studied,
but I eventually got used to managing my time with lectures, assignments from lecturers, and
time to myself make revisions.
Aside from that, my experience while studying this topic was that I was able to learn
something new in a new setting, namely online distance learning (ODL). This type of
learning is really difficult for me because I can only engage with lecturers and students via
social media. Some of the concepts I learnt were difficult to grasp because of vocabulary I
had never heard or learned before. However, after asking the lecturer about it, I can
understand it better once it was described in further detail. I will also make brief notes on
what I learnt in each chapter so that I can readily grasp them and refer to them while
reviewing a lesson. I learned a lot while studying this topic, such as what it takes to be a
strong leader, what it takes to achieve goals in business management, how to communicate
with workers, how to create a pleasant atmosphere with employees, and much more. This is a
really fascinating and valuable item since it is quite advantageous if I want to be a successful
business in future.

2
SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTER LEARNT

CHAPTER 8: COMMUNICATION
The act of communication entails delivering information to others in order to provoke a
response. A manager must properly engage with employees in order for all work to be
faultless. The communication process is comprised of eight components which is:

Furthermore, there are several ways to transmit under the area of interpersonal
communication, including verbal communication, written communication, nonverbal
communication, and communication using technology. Communication through nonverbal
means there are other elements to consider, including kinesics behaviour (body movements)
and ocular behaviour. Information may be delivered correctly using these behaviours.
In this chapter, I was also able to overcome communication barriers. To help people
comprehend better, we should use plain language, reduce noise, and avoid drawing
inferences. That is one of the techniques for effective communication. This communication
chapter is crucial for us to strengthen our communication. I am also aware that
communication will be crucial in conquering many hurdles in the future.

3
BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION:

CHAPTER 9: QUALITY
The quality aspect of management is discussed in Chapter 9. In this chapter addresses the
question of how a company's offerings—including its goods, manufacturing procedures, and
resource utilization—can boost consumer pleasure. By dissecting and studying how the
business operates, how it may be improved, what sorts of problems it is now experiencing
and what is causing them, what the best and most effectively to handle them, and how it can
be improved. So, we need to consider how we can improve to guarantee that our performance
improves from the outset, we must evaluate each of these aspects.

CHAPTER 10: ISLAMIC MANAGEMENT

Allah SWT's rules relate to every aspect of Muslim life. Islam aspires to create a just and true
society. Islam helps people to understand one another's actions and cohabit happily in this
world and the next, providing peace and prosperity. Management requires optimising both
human and material resources in order to achieve both short- and long-term objectives. The
Islamic management theory has shown to be useful from the time of Prophet Muhammad
SAW. It also provides us with specific instructions on how to live a financially balanced and
just life. This government is a reflection of Prophet Muhammad SAW's teachings as seen in
the Quran and Sunnah. Islamic management manages management in accordance with
Islamic principles and practises by utilising information from publicly available resources
and other Islamic references. The emphasis of Islamic management concepts is on directing
managers to be better in their organisations.

4
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THESE CHAPTER

CHAPTER 8: COMMUNICATION
In this chapter I realised that when giving knowledge to others, we must be aware for
disturbances in order to ensure efficient transmission. This will make it easy to offer entire
information without leaving anything out. By receiving response from the message's receiver
is essential for us, so that they may express their thoughts or concerns about the
communication. The use of sophisticated syntax might sometimes impede others from
comprehending the message. I've realised that the most essential component of
communication is how well people understand you rather than how well you talk. Effective
language use is essential for communication. When delivering communications, pay close
attention to the recipients since they may be distracted by a number of issues. As a result, the
communication is misheard and misconstrued. Another critical part of communication is the
usage of the correct channel, as only a few locations have dependable internet connections for
online meetings.

CHAPTER 9: QUALITY
I found that sustaining quality is critical for the growth of any company firm. The only way
for a firm to flourish in today's market, with its ever-increasing competition, is to adapt.
Consumers are continuously looking for ways to enhance the quality of their lives, so it
stands to reason that companies would need to increase the quality of the products and
services they offer in order to meet these expectations. In order to obtain quality in
commodities and goods, a firm's or business organization's procedures and techniques must
also be enhanced. Otherwise, a firm would struggle to thrive in an ever-changing sector and
will likely lose clients.

CHAPTER 10: ISLAMIC MANAGEMENT

According to the Islamic Management chapter, it has been practised since the inception of
Islam. I realised that by adopting Islamic management concepts, a favourable outcome may
be predicted in the vast majority of instances. I learn more about how Islam's effect on
management outperforms that of other management perspectives. Islamic leadership skills
and principles, Islamic management concepts, and Islamic whether formal or informal, all
management positions emphasise the need of implementing Islamic principles into the
workplace. Be truthful and accountable; regard the entire, not just oneself; and practise
courteous communication. Islamic management encompasses the tasks of planning,
organising, leading, and controlling.

5
DIFFICULTIES OR CHALLENGES I ENCOUNTERED
For me, I'm not having a lot of trouble trying to grasp the chapters. However, when I
first learnt about the chapters, I struggled to grasp them. Because the internet connection in
the hostel isn't especially dependable, the fact that the course was provided online via
UfUTURE bothers me tremendously. During lectures, I could have viewed the text and slides
that the lecturer had created or provided me. Also because of my surroundings so noisy, it is
still difficult for me to concentrate and listen to the lecture. Throughout the online lesson, I
usually feel drowsy, sluggish, and unmotivated.

THE REASON FOR THE DIFFICULTIES OR CHALLENGES

First and foremost, processing everything is difficult for me because I lack basic knowledge
and am learning about this subject for the first time. I am unable to ask straightforward
questions during online sessions due to my timidity. Furthermore, the bad internet access in
the dormitories distracts me and prevents me from paying attention to the lecture video.
When hanging out with their buddies, people always chat loudly while playing with their
phones. They will be laughing and yelling while playing computer games and making
keyboard noises without noticing it, disturbing me who is taking online courses or attempting
to study. I usually find myself dropping off just as the online course is about to conclude.

THE STRATEGIES THAT I USED TO GET THROUGH THE

DIFFICULTIES OR CHALLENGES
If I not understand when learning any of topic I will study up on that topic after a lecture to
better understand it. I also go out in the evening to get some fresh air to help ease tension. I
can only access the internet in my room because only my bed is where the internet signal is
highest, so I can only hope for the best so that the internet doesn't go wild. Furthermore,
while dealing with distracting noises or sounds during online lectures, I will use headphones
to allow me to concentrate better on the lecture video. Before the lecture, I ask my roommates
to keep quiet so that I can focus on the presentation and I will tell them to wear earbuds
whether they want to play games, listen to music, or have an online meeting. Last but not
least, if I have morning classes, I try not to sleep too late so that I may optimise my energy
for the day and concentrate on whatever the professor has prepared for me.

MY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS REGARDING THE CHAPTER

When I studying these chapters, I recognised that they weren't only teaching me how to
operate a business; all of these abilities are applicable in real life. I learned that management
is relevant to many aspects of life, not just business. Also, from how we spend our time, how
we interact with people, and what ideals we choose to follow while trying to get to in future.
All of these are critical components of how we conduct our lives. Because they are all
interrelated, they are not separated. When it is not necessary, we may not pay much attention

6
to it, but when it is, it is really advantageous for us. I feel like I learned something new or
improved my understanding of what I already knew in this semester.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, self-reflection learning has helped me with many aspects of my life. By
studying Fundamentals of Management, I can clearly define my goals and evaluate my own
learning progress based on my environment, this indicating that I am on the right road since I
can continue to develop myself in my studies. Throughout this semester, I discovered that
MGT 162 is not just about the subject to learn and think that I need to pass this subject for a
good grade, but it is actually a learning where I can adapt and keep it in my mind as long-
term memory as I can to use all the terms and theory in my daily life or in the future. It is
obvious without need to saying anything that we require management abilities in order to live
a more organised. However, after I considering and evaluating all the things, I know that I am
making a better progress in this learning process because I will always keep learning and
understanding it, and if I fail, I will rise again and make another move with another effective
strategy as I can to achieve my goals and dreams next time. Even though I will face too
numerous challenges and barriers, I have promised myself that I would not easily give up and
will find another way and try different alternatives in my learning process to get the best
outcomes in the end.
