Title: EXPLORE AND VERIFY BOYLE’S LAW

Purpose: this experiment wants to verify Boyle’s law using a pressure sensor connected to a
laptop.
Theory: Boyle’s law state that for a fixed mass of gas at a constant temperature, the product
between pressure and volume is constant, so pressure is inversely proportional to volume. If the
volume of a fixed mass of an ideal gas is halved by halving the volume of the container, the
number of molecules per cm3 will be doubled. There will be twice as many collisions per second
with the walls, and therefore the pressure is doubled.

If p∙V= constant,

knowing that the data recorded by pressure sensor indicate the difference between the pressure
in the syringe graduated and the air pressure, we will have:

(p atm + Δp)V = constant

Tools and materials:
- graduated syringe
- pressure sensor
- Science Cube 2 (Data logger)
- laptop
Procedure:
1) Put the syringe in the pressure sensor connected to the laptop
2) Start to record the first pressure data when the syringe is at 0
3) Pull the piston of the syringe in order to obtain a bigger volume and so a smaller pressure
4) Record other data by choosing different volumes in the syringe
5) Enter the data in a table on Excel and create a graph starting from the linear equation:
Δ costant × 1
p=
V −Patm

Collection of data:
∆ p (hPa) V (ml) 1/V (ml-1)
1,3 0
-877,5 2 0,5
-920,4 3 0,33333333
-962 6 0,16666667
-973,7 8 0,125
Conclusion:
The law is verified because the graph is linear and points out the inverse proportionality between
the pressure and the volume.
