2 Normative references
The lighting column shall conform to the latest edition of following international
standards:
(a) IEC 60050(466): IEV – Part 466: Overhead lines
(b) IEC 60652: Loading tests on overhead line structures
(c) BS 5649 (or EN 40): Specifications for lighting columns
(d) ISO 1459: Metal coatings-Protection against corrosion by hot dip galvanizing
(e) ISO 1460: Hot dip galvanized coatings on ferrous metals- Determination of the mass
(f) ISO 1461: Hot dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel article
(g) ISO 630: Steel for general structure
3 Definitions
3.1 Bracket
The component used to support (a) lamp(s) at a definite distance from the axis of the
lower straight part of the lighting column

The plate below ground level to a planted column to prevent the column sinking into the
ground and overturning

5 Requirements
5.1 Required structure
The poles shall meet the requirements listed below. If not mentioned, the relevant
clauses on the AASHTO shall be taken into account.
5.1.5 Straightness
The pole shall be so straight that the straightness of the pole can meet the clause 8.1 of

BS 5649: Part 2.

(b) The position and dimensions of the door opening and the cable entry shall comply
with the request of GECOL. Otherwise, they shall be in compliance with the clause 4
of BS 5649: Part 2.
5.1.10 Cableway
(a) The cableway from the base compartment to the lamp connection shall be a minimum
of 35 mm containing diameter unless requested by GECOL.
(b) The cableway from the cable entry to the base compartment shall be a minimum of 70
mm containing diameter unless requested by GECOL.
(c) All cableways shall be smooth and free from obstruction with no sharp edges, burrs
and the like which might cause abrasion of the cable.
5.1.12 Tolerance
The tolerance of the dimensions shall be stated by the provider and meet the clause 8 of
BS 5649: Part 2.
5.1.13 Welding
(a) For the steel lighting pole, metal-arc welding shall comply with BS 5135.
(b) For aluminum alloy lighting pole, filler rods or wire used for gas shielded arc welding
of aluminum alloy shall comply with BS 2901: Part 4.
(c) Transverse welding shall not be permitted.

5.1.14 Self lowering device
If requested by GECOL, the pole shall be equipped with the self lowing device
including its accessories to land the fixtures for safe and easy maintenance of the fixtures.
(a) The self lowering device shall be equipped with at least 3 wires for lifting the fixtures
up and down. The wires shall be able to withstand the weight of the fixtures when one
of the wires is cut off.
(b) The safety factor of the wires shall comply with GECOL’s request. Unless otherwise
mentioned, the value of 2.5 shall be taken into account.
(c) The wires shall be of equivalent to or better than the stainless steel.
(d) The sheaves shall withstand the weight of the fixtures and wires. The sheaves shall be
of equivalent to or better than the stainless steel.
(e) The safety factor of the sheaves shall not be less than that of wires.
(f) The head frame assemble shall be fabricated from galvanized steel or stainless steel,
and shall securely mount to the high mast pole with stainless steel set of screws.
(g) The power of the motor provided shall be sufficient to cover the weight of fixtures,
wires, and so on. The motor shall be waterproof.

(d) Visual inspections
- Dimension of the base compartment and its door: 5.1.9 of this specification
- Dimension of the door opening: 4 of BS 5649: Part 2.
- Dimension of the flange plate and its bolts: 5.1.7 of this specification
7 Marking
7.1 Earthing terminal
The earthing terminal shall be distinctly and durably marked with the below symbol and
the size of the symbol shall be at least 10 mm.

(d) Year of manufacturing
8 Delivery
The supplier shall ensure that there is no deterioration of characteristics during the
transit to their final destination.
(a) The poles shall not be bent during transportation and storage.
(b) There shall be neither scratching nor punching on the poles during transportation and
storage.
(c) The poles shall be carried on the proper transport vehicles.
The supplier shall provide the method of transportation and storage to withstand rough
handling during transit and exposure to extreme temperature, salt and precipitation during
transit and open storage.

(b) If any, the certificates of sample tests according to clause 6.2 of this specification shall
be provided by supplier.
(c) The certificates of routine tests according to clause 6.3 of this specification shall be
provided by supplier, if required by GECOL.
10 Warranty
The supplier shall warrant the poles for the term of warranty beginning on the date when
the poles is delivered. The warranty shall cover full of the poles and supplier’s labor costs,
which are attributable to the supplier.
The term of warranty shall be decided by mutual agreement between GECOL and the
supplier.
