Civil works, sustainability, resilience whatever the concern is, ‘the mother earth’ has to hold
you. I, Romana Yasmeen, a highly motivated student who aspires to pursue a career in the
geotechnical engineering field, particularly in research. Coming from a third world country and
a conservative family threw a lot more challenges to my career. But adhering to my own "D-
cube" (Discipline, Determination, and Dedication) rule always provided a solution for obtaining
my good academic standing, as well as my positive traits and pertinent talents.
Technological advancement to reinforce the earth, to improve the ground or to stabilize the soil
needs to take into consideration the continuous chemical reactions happening over there and
mechanics, according to my observation. For the substructures, there is lot more to do in soil-
water interaction and soil-structure interaction in case of static and dynamic condition,
considering the fact that materials have memory.
Aspiring a career of a full-fledged researcher in the field of structural engineering, I struggled a lot to
complete the graduation in CEE as a second bachelor's degree. However, my struggles rather boosted
my courage to work harder which resulted in achieving ‘Summa Cum Laude’ award and the ‘Man of the
class’ title in the end. In CEE, I could not get the chance to do the upper-level structural engineering
optional courses as those were not offered then. Nevertheless, the final year capstone project (township
development project) and later working in an engineering consultancy farm for almost one year aided
me with adequate industrial experience in this field. Then, apart from the undergraduate level research,
working as a research assistant and associate researcher enhanced my research capabilities in such a
way that I am confident enough to undertake any sophisticated research responsibility. During my
undergraduate training, I chose to do my research in transportation as it was a more convenient option
for me then.
