(1) Many Moroccan students and school-children work over the summer to fund the next year’s
studies. Coming mostly from families with limited incomes, they have to give up their holidays to
work and take on small seasonal jobs. Some sell boxes of tissues in the main city streets, or sweets and
ice cream to children on the beaches. Others try to get a job in a restaurant or a café.
(2) There are school-children like 14-year-old Hamid who, for seven years now, has had to be
financially independent. He sells plastic bags, umbrellas, sweets, balloons, gums, tissues, and so on.
“My father died when I was 5 years old,” Hamid said. “My mother had to work as cleaner in many
houses. She couldn’t meet the family’s needs and wants. That is why I work during the summer; I
don’t want to drop out of school. My studies will help me achieve my dreams when I’m older,” he
said with a big smile.
(3) Like Hamid, 16-year-old Hiba puts her Moroccan biscuit-making skills to good use during
the summer. She has managed to attract lot of customers who like her biscuits and pastries a lot. “My
dad is a seasonal worker and my mum is a housewife,” she said. “Our finances are very limited. So, I
decided to take my future in my own hands, working during my free time. The holidays are a good
time to make some money. So, my dad doesn’t have to worry about the start of the new school year,”
she said proudly.
(4) Elsewhere, other young people whose families are better financially also choose to do
summer jobs. Their aim is often to enrich their personal experience and to prepare for the future
employment. This is the story of Hamdane Bouchouika, who is 18 years old. For two years, he has
worked the month of July as a cashier in a restaurant in Agadir. At first, his parents were astonished at
his decision. But they encouraged him later on. “My work has really built up my confidence over time.
Plus, the money I get over this month means I can treat myself to a little time away in August,” he
said.
(5) Some university students work as secretaries for doctors or lawyers, replacing employees who
are away on holiday, or just as baby-sitter or counselors. This is the case of twenty-year-old Abdellah
who worked as a counselor at a youth camp in Essaouira last summer.
(6) Sociologist Samira Kassimi says that Moroccan society is changing now that everyone –
especially in urban areas – has grasped the importance of education. More and more parents are being
convinced that working during the holidays will teach their youngsters how to be more responsible.
