EXPERIMENT -3

AIMTo find the refractive index of a liquid by using a concave mirror.

Requirements:Three concave mirrors, a transparent liquid (water), an optical

needle, an iron stand with base and clamp arrangement, a plumb line and a half metre scale

Theory:For a concave mirror with horizontal surface and vertical principal axis. When an object
needle is at the centre of curvature C of the mirror, the real image is also formed at C. The rays
starting from C and incident on the concave mirror strike it normally and retrace their path and
the image is formed at C. Spread a small amount of liquid in the centre of the mirror. Adjust the
position of the needle at C' so that parallax is removed between the needle and its inverted
image. Nowthe ray of light proceeding along C'L is refracted along LM normal to The mirror and
retraces its path. If appears to come from C, the centre of curvature of the mirror.

Then as seen from fig 1.
