The Light of the Lamp

Robert Morris

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Have you ever stubbed your toe in the dark? Do you believe we walk in a dark world? We need a lamp
to help us walk.

God’s Word is a light that shines in the darkness. Are we stumbling spiritually because we’re not using
our lamp?

1. A lamp to my feet.

Luke 11:33-36 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a
lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore,
when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also
is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. If then your whole
body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining
of a lamp gives you light.”

Remember the same person wrote the Bible. If the lamp is the Word in Psalm 119, what is it in Luke
11?

God’s word is our lamp! If we read God’s Word, we are filling ourselves with light. Think how much
darkness we see every day!

1
Exodus 25:37 You shall make seven lamps for it, and they shall arrange its lamps so that they give
light in front of it.

God told them to design the lamps to shine in front. God wants to give you light so you can see which
way to go!

Exodus 27:20 “And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed
olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually.

God’s Word is a lamp that burns continually. It’s always showing the way for us. God also told them to
light the lamps in the morning and at night. Can you imagine if you started and ended your day with a
lamp? A lamp to your feet and a light to your path.

Think about a lamp to your feet. It’s enough light to take the next step how many times do we have to
know what the next step is?

Psalm 18:28 For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.

Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the
way of life

Luke 15:8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep
the house, and search carefully until she finds it?

The woman who had 10 coins and lost one lit a lamp. If you’ve lost your way, if you’ve lost a
relationship, if you’ve lost your health, if you’ve lost your investment, why not light a lamp and look for
it?

2. A light to my path.

John 1:6-9 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to
bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to
bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the
world.

1 John 1:5-7 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light
and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we
lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with
one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

2
John 3:20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds
should be exposed.

This book will keep me from sin. Sin will keep me from this book! When we’re in sin, we don’t want to
come to the light. But this is exactly the book we need to read when we’re in sin.

Light dispels darkness. There is no fight! Light comes on and darkness flees. Turn the light on if you’re
living in or struggling with darkness!

His Word is a light to my path. His Word gives us direction and shows us which way to go! How many
times do we have a decision to make? And we need direction from God

I want to teach you how to get a word from God’s Word! How do you get a word for yourself from
God’s word? First, you quiet yourself and come into His presence. How do you come into His
presence?

Psalm 100:2 Come before His presence with singing.

Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him,
and bless His name.

We come in His Presence with prayer and praise! Put on some worship music and begin worshipping
Him. Worship Him until you know and sense His presence.

Praise and then pray! Then tell Him what’s on your heart. Write down your prayers and how you feel.
Write down any impressions that you feel He is speaking. Ask the Lord where He wants you to read.

Think about any Bible stories that you’ve heard. That are similar to your situation. If a Bible story
comes to your mind, read it. Even if you don’t think it’s similar to your situation.

Start meeting with God every day. Read a chapter in the Bible and write down what you think He is
saying. This is training your spiritual ears to hear God.

You need to allow time to do this! I think you should spend at least 30 minutes with the Lord every
day. I’ve talked about starting with 15 minutes. And that’s good for beginners, but it’s not enough
time. When you really need to hear God and make a decision. Get up one hour earlier that day. Or try
to postpone doing anything else for one hour.

This will give you an hour and a half to hear the Lord! Sometimes, we will even need more time. You
might need to get away for a day or two for major decisions.

Many times, I take my laptop and drive to a lake. I just sit on the shore, put on some worship music
and spend time with God.

Let’s say, you’re going through some difficulties in your marriage. Think about the married couples in
the Bible:

• Abraham and Sarah.

• Isaac and Rebekah.
• Jacob and Rachael.
• Boaz and Ruth.

Look up passages on Marriage and read them. What if you’re going through difficulties with your
children? It’s the same thing.

Sometimes a story comes to your mind that you don’t think has anything to do with your situation. But
God knows the Bible really well.

What about finances? Read passages on finances. What about health? What about friendships?

When I was 30 years old, I was asked to be the presiding elder. God gave me Luke 3 and 4. Here is
just one of the scriptures.

Luke 3:23 Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age

He spoke to me that He was well pleased with me. He spoke to me about how to treat people. He
spoke to me about being content with my wages. He spoke to me about being full of the Holy Spirit.
He spoke to me about the 3 ways the enemy would attack me. He spoke to me about helping people
to receive all He had for them.

I taught my daughter how to get a word from God. He spoke to her also.

Revelation 4:1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first
voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you
things which must take place after this.”

When I was praying about moving up here to start the church. God spoke to me Genesis 35 and
Deuteronomy 11.

Genesis 35:1 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar
there to God

My wife felt like we should go ahead and move up here. I told God I needed a word. He told me to
read it again.

Genesis 35:1 (NLT) Then God said to Jacob, “Get ready and move to Bethel and settle there.
